Last night's show.
Posted on: 10/01/2021 10:16 AM

I've seen America in concert a lot. Like, a whole lot of times. More than 60 times.

Last night's show in Dallas was among their finest performances. Taking eighteen months off seemed to recharge their batteries. Maybe not being able to see them for eighteen months also added to the anticipation.

But everything was alive and fun. Beckely and Bunnell were in top form vocally as well as musically. Also, their humor and rapport between songs really hit the mark. My wife, whom I have dragged to more than her share of shows, also commented on how that was the best America show she's ever seen as well.

The songs had a new freshness and energy to them. And the sound at the venue was perfect. Their band was up to the task too, standing out when given the spotlight, but adding a whole new layer of vitality to the show.

A few standouts were "Driving" from Lost & Found, and my personal all-time favorite America song, "Cornwall Blank."

It was an outdoor venue. Major storms were predicted to hit mid-show but they didn't materialize. Right as their "Horse With No Name" encore started, huge drops of rain hit but luckily the downpour was hours away.

Anyway, just wanted to say how wonderful the show was, how great it was to see them live again. And how much fun they are still having after 51 years. I saw the Eagles last week in Dallas as well. It was a three-hour show. I can honestly say, America was just as good, just as current, just as relevant. (Interesting thing about the Eagles: while there are eight musicians on stage only one original member is left, Don Henley.)

I can't imagine anyone on this site passing up a chance to see the band in concert. But my recommendation is, take a friend who's never seen them. They will come away blown away.

After all this time, America is still the best.

Thanks, guys.

Hey, thanks Kevin! I’m very envious at the moment but I really appreciate your review of the show. It has been an awfully long time in between shows for myself. I’m gonna do something about it this coming year! Great post!DanC

Hey Kevin, nice to see such a good review from a veteran fan. I also have seen them over 60 times dating back to 1975. I always like the outdoor shows as the sound tends to be much better. I last saw them March 6 2020, their second to last show before covid stoppage. My only wish with would be for them to change up the setlist. The last 3 years has been virtually unchanged...

I totally agree with Howard. I have seen them on all the UK tours, and in recent years the set lists have been almost identical. We know the casual fans want to hear the hits, but they could still include some new material (if there is any) and also change the dialogue between songs.

I also agree with the last two Posts regarding the Set-Lists. I have been a massive Fan of the Band for around 50 years , but I would like to see a little more variation of material in their live Performances. It would also be nice for a UK Tour and a new Album of songs !!
I can live in hope ! Best wishes to all America Fans and I hope that more uplifting and normal times will return to us all soon.

I think the reason the set-list does not change much is because
the typical fan sees them infrequently. So they have found that they have to offer the best hits at all the shows. It's only the die-hards who see them dozens of times, that the frequency gets difficult. They are doing what their management suggests to meet the needs of the masses. How else could they thrive for 50 years ?
AMERICA is GERRY BECKLEY and DEWEY BUNNELL.

I agree the set list could use an update. But with an eighteen month gap, I had no problems with it. It was just great to hear them again.

They have to perform all the hits and some of their classic albums cuts (Sandman, Cornwall Blank, etc...) but they could still add some other songs to the playlist. I know these are technically Gerry solo songs, but I would like to hear Emma and Goodbye Highway in concert.

What are some songs they don't play that you would like to hear?

Good question:

"Ride On," "Today's The Day," "Coming On," "God Of The Sun"

Those are off the top of my head.

Catch That Train,And Forever, Amber Cascades, Wheels Are Turning, all from Dewey and Sergeant Darkness, Chasing the Rainbow, Inspector Mills, From a Moving Train, all from Gerry! There are so many good ones but these would all be wonderful additions to anyone’s playlist! I’ve been fortunate to experience a few of these over the years and it would be great if they could dust them off and bring them back for everyone to enjoy!DanC

Steve

Thanks for the update.

I didn't realise it was on the boxset.

I have the boxset but not played very much of it hence why I didn't notice the song.
