Not until moments ago did I wonder how Bread got their name. Here is how:

"Along with Royer, they formed a band, signed with Elektra and named themselves Bread after getting stuck in traffic behind a Wonder Bread truck."

"Sweet Surrender"

Malcolm C. Searles

Read: A Sweet Surrender: The Musical Journey of David Gates, James Griffin & Co. Paperback

KoG - Another fine read. I was fortunate enough to pre-order the hard bound copy back in 2013. Even has my name inside for being one of the first 100 to order..... just dumb luck. It was a great read.
Sorry, I don't know how to add the video link like you do .... :)

mdh - I was viewing some YouTube videos on David Gates performing in more recent times. His singing voice is just as sweet sounding as it was back when he was singing Bread's hit songs! Father Time sure does a number on all of us in regards to our appearance.

Regarding how to add a YouTube video link to your message here, let me provide the instructions:

1) Go to the video you're viewing on YouTube and copy the link that appears at the top of your browser. Using the "Sweet Surrender" video you posted as an example, it will be the following that you will be copying: https://youtu.be/j-OJV4hjwSI

2) After having copied that link, come to this America site and start by composing a message.

3) After you have composed the message, look at the icons on top of the area here where you're typing your message. You see the 13 different icons that appear above? The first one is a square with the letter "B" while the last square has the letters "SP". Find the square with the lightning bolt. It's the third square from the right.

4) Click once on the lightning bolt.

5) Delete the information that appears between the two quotation marks. You will be deleting the following: http://www.web_address.here

6) In its place, paste the link of the YouTube video between the two quotation marks.

7) Next, delete the following: Click Text Here

8) In its place, type in the following words: Sweet Surrender

9) After that, you should be good to hit the "Save" button to post your message.

It's hard to give proper instructions via a typed out message as I'm doing. It's so much easier by telephone. Anyway, it may take some experimenting and a number of attempts to get it right. If it doesn't work the first time, just delete and try again and again. That is if I have instructed you correctly. If it still doesn't work, just let me know here and we can do it by phone. Best of luck!

KoG - Thank you for taking the time and effort to explain. it took me a bit but i got it :)

I was fortunate to see David Gates and Bread back in 1997. My wife surprised me with a trip to Sunfest in Ocean City MD. It was a great concert including the strings etc. As you stated He has an amazing voice. James Griffin, Mike Botts, Larry Knechtel and they toted along Guitar (gun) slinging Dean Parks and his wife Carol for backing vocals. An evening I'll never forget ! James was a gifted and talented singer/songwriter himself.
Again, I thank you for assisting me !

Alright, mdh, glad the linking of a YouTube video to your posting worked for you! It's my pleasure to be of assistance! Glad also that you immensely enjoyed your surprise trip and concert to see David Gates and his bandmates! I can relate to that with the first time I saw America in 1975. It was my first concert ever with my favorite group whose music I played on the stereo over and over.

I have enjoyed watching all of your selections. Great artist !
As a music lover I enjoy most music of most genre but I really do love America music.
Since you added a Doobie Bros video I have a question I ask a lot of DB fans. Johnston or McDonald era as lead vocal ?

mdh - That is a very good and interesting question regarding Tom Johnston or Michael McDonald. I like both guys as Doobie members. I have seen the Doobies in concert only once and that was when "What A Fool Believes" was at the top of the charts. I'm not much of a Michael McDonald fan regarding his solo work. I have not purchased any of the Doobies albums after the release of "One Step Closer" which I believe was the last album McDonald was with them as a member. So, it's sort of mixed up for me concerning the Doobies. I like how Pat Simmons has been the steady force for them for all these years. If the Doobies had released another album with McDonald as a member, I probably would have purchased it. I really like the songs Johnston wrote and sang lead prior to McDonald. I guess I'll just leave it at that. I realize that's not much of a direct answer. What about for you?

K of G - I too have only seen the Doobies once 1980. I was a fan of their early recordings and liked Johnston as the lead vocal. Your comment about Pat Simmons is spot on IMO. Couldn't agree more. I appreciate and respect the fact that M McD took the reins when Johnston left for health reasons and their success continued to grow even better than I ever expected. That said I personally preferred the early years better.

mdh - I will be commenting in a very brief way on each of the artists you choose. Here is how I will be doing it. You may follow if it pleases you to do so.

OWN - Meaning I OWN some form of recording by that artist.

WP - Meaning WOULD PURCHASE. Don't own any recording by this artist.

WNP - Meaning WOULD NOT PURCHASE even though he/she/they may be an excellent artist. Just not my style of music.

So, for Dave Mason: WP

mdh - It was bound to happen, but I thought it would be later rather than sooner. Wanting to keep it totally real and honest, I unfortunately would have to say: WNP. Just didn't hit a chord with me. However, they sort of remind me of who I have chosen next although I don't actually own anything by them other than the one song on a CD. They came to town and performed a free concert.

K-of-G I've blundered again..... I posted the wrong video ! Same artist, wrong song HaHa !
It's funny though I'm not a fan of Los Lonely Boys so that would be a WNP for me... :)

TOTO - I like live performances but the studio version of this song is silkier. As D&G have said, some songs are just very hard to reproduce live. As we have discussed.... father time has something to say about the voice. :)

"Fahrenheit" and "Isolation" happen to be the only two Toto releases that I OWN on vinyl. All the others are on CD. Like "Takin' It Back" there are so many nice songs by the group. Coincidentally, just several weeks ago, I was watching a YouTube video about all the ups and downs they have had during their many years. Besides, "99" one of my other favorites by the band is "Pamela".

Even though I don't own a single recording by him (not even this song), I have always liked it. But first, a medley of songs written by him for other artists with "INRISC" to follow.

Wow, mdh, you mentioned THREE of the artists who I have on my list for upcoming postings! How were you able to see my list? LOL

I had Paul Carrack as a solo artist written down as well as Mike and the Mechanics and Squeeze! Not only that but I had THIS SPECIFIC SONG chosen for Paul Carrack! What a coincidence!

Regarding Ace, I don't have any of their music, but I have several CDs of Paul Carrack as a solo performer. So,concerning Ace that would be a WP!

I have most all of Squeeze's music on CD and, of course, the one that has "Tempted" on it as sung by Carrack.

MIKE AND THE MECHANICS

I had them written down last week so might as well submit their video next since you mentioned them in your most recent submission. The following is my favorite song of theirs with Paul Carrack on keyboards:

I started a short list as well however, I've managed to change my mind on several occasions because I don't want to take the fun out of just picking whats on my mind at the time. (DOTI)

Edison Lighthouse

I always found this intriguing,
Tony Burrows sang the lead vocals on several other one-hit wonder songs under different group names, Edison Lighthouse's "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)" (February 1970); White Plains' "My Baby Loves Lovin'" (March 1970); The Pipkins' novelty song "Gimme Dat Ding" (April 1970); and The First Class' "Beach Baby" ...

mdh - This is unbelievable! Just last night I was viewing all the bands Tony Burrows has been in and has sung lead for. I thought about posting each of the songs you mentioned on separate days then revealing they were all sung by the same person. Just too bizarre the coincidence! I actually purchased "Love Grows..." when I was in junior high and still OWN the 45. In high school (I believe it may have been or soon after), I bought the LP that has "Beach Baby" on it. I must have given it to my sister as it's been missing for years now, and I never tossed any albums out. I remember thinking "Beach Baby" was the best song on the LP and the other songs didn't do that much for me. I remember seeing a YouTube video a few years back where Tony Burrows said both bands, Edison Lighthouse and White Plains, were scheduled to appear on the same TV show. He said he had to run to change clothes after one group's performance to quickly be on stage for the other. And, I have always liked "My Baby Loves Lovin'". Makes perfect sense being that it's the same singer even though I didn't know it back then.

TOMMY SHAW

He's a member of Styx, but I'm not really a Styx fan. I guess it would be like saying I like Gerry's solo music, but I'm not that much of an America fan. Odd, I know. Shaw also has sung with several other bands with one of them being Damn Yankees.

Foreigner

Without doubt one of the biggest music influences on my high school 70's days !
I'm a big fan of great album cuts that were not singles. Add to the fact that Mick Jones sang lead on this cut.... even better ;)
I think Lou Gramm had one the the best studio rock voices ever. I say studio because I've seen them several times back in the day and Lou liked to play around with the songs. As Mick would say, he had a lazy tongue..... Lou said he was bored and was trying to be creative. Lou had some good songs with Black Sheep Also.

Good deal going with Foreigner! OWN! They actually came to perform in my small town of 35,000 or so. Unfortunately, it wasn't when Lou Gramm was with them. It was an excellent concert, however. When they sang, "I Want To Know What Love Is," they had a local high school choir on stage singing with them which I thought was very cool. Did you know that Gramm has released a Christian CD or two? I found that fascinating. I viewed a YouTube video of him talking about his having had a brain tumor that was successfully removed, thanks be to God! Perhaps my favor solo song of his is "Midnight Blue".

Wow! They were really kickin' it with "American Woman"! Interesting that it was a Canadian band who wrote and performed a song about an American woman. I don't own that particular album with the song, but I did purchase The Guess Who's LP, "Road Food" which had the hit song, "Clap For The Wolfman".

RANDY MEISNER

Saw Randy Meisner when he came to my college back in the day and when his solo album "Hearts On Fire" was released. Unfortunately, he hasn't aged well and has health issues these days. The following video shows him in his prime. I suggest skipping the silly intro and begin the video at the 25 second mark.

mdh - Nice choice! Did you see the 12th entry of these video postings? I had posted it before you joined me. Just curious to know if you saw it and still wanted to post another Restless Heart song which is great by me!

I have 4 or 5 of their CDs, but not the particular one you posted the song from. I have seen Restless Heart twice. Once was a free concert here in my home town. The other time was also local, but Restless Heart appeared with two other country bands. One was Diamond Rio and the other was who I will be featuring for my next video as they are my favorite country band. The tour with all three bands was called, "Triple Threat". It was an excellent night of country music! The odd thing about Restless Heart is when their lead singer Larry Stewart left to pursue a solo career, the band continued on without him, and the other members stepped up to sing lead. Ironically, they had their most successful song after Stewart left. He did return some time later and has remained with them to this day.

mdh - Excellent choice going with England Dan and John Ford Coley! They are one of my favorite duos from the 70s. I OWN the LP from which "Westward Wind" is from as well as a couple of other releases of theirs. "Westward Wind" is a very nice song. It's unfortunate that they didn't have a larger history of releases like Dewey and Gerry have. I don't know if you are aware of the following, but I thought it was interesting: John Ford Coley's real name is "John Edward Colley". And, Dan Seals was called "England Dan" by his brother because he liked the Beatles a lot and would occasionally speak with a British accent.

I don't know if you chose "ED & JFC" knowing my choice of Little Texas has a connection to a member of that band. Former singer and songwriter for Little Texas is Brady Seals who is a cousin of Dan and his brother Jim of Seals and Crofts. And, Brady Seals was my second entry on this thread. He was the one singing with Dash Crofts' daughter as a member of Seals and Crofts 2.

Anyone here is certainly welcome to join in with us if they would like to.

LOL, mdh, "ooga chacka"! Blue Swede! Funny!!!

Excellent choice going with B. J. Thomas. OWN! I attended an afternoon performance of B. J. at the auditorium where I attended high school. It was either on a Saturday or a Sunday. It was a very nice show. That same morning, I had spotted the tour bus parked outside the auditorium and asked one of the crew members if it was possible to have a couple of album covers autographed. To my delight, he told me there would be a meet and greet after the performance. Indeed there was. B.J. announced it at the end of the show saying he would be out after he cleaned up a bit. About 30 minutes later, sure enough, he appeared with semi-wet hair and in a jogging suit! I saw during the performance the crew member who I had talked to earlier that day was the guitar player.

I had with me 3 or 4 of his albums and a 45 of "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry". During the concert, he said the song was his father's favorite of all the songs he had recorded. As he was signing my album covers, he said he hopes not to see them on eBay. From the tone of his voice, he was quite serious which surprised me! I assured him they were keepers which, of course, they are. When he was autographing one of the covers, I mentioned to him that I see he was wearing the same ring as on the cover (album "Two Car Garage"). He said it's the same ring except it has a different stone. He explained he allowed his wife to have the diamond stone for a ring she want to have made. He said during the concert he has been married only once and was still married to his wife.

I had read online that he reluctantly recorded "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" only after Bobby Goldsboro had turned it down and that he (B.J) wasn't that excited about the song in the beginning and almost turned it down himself.

My next musical selection isn't really that dear to me as I have only one CD of theirs, and it's a greatest hits called, "Rewind". mdh - Paul Overstreet is an excellent songwriter of country music. The song, "I Won't Take Less Than Your Love," I recognize as a song recorded by sassy female country artist Tanya Tucker. I believe I may have talked about her a time or two in the past here. I can't remember whether here or on Facebook. Perhaps on both. Regarding Paul Overstreet, as talented a songwriter as he is, in all honesty I probably WNP, but as mentioned, he is a wonderful writer of many country songs!

TANYA TUCKER

She finally won a Grammy just this year after being in the music industry for many years. She doesn't have the best vocal quality, but she sure makes up for it with her fun personality in my opinion. She was actually born only 30 miles east of my home town which is Seminole, Texas. It has a population of only about 6,300 people. Interestingly, another country music celeb was born there as well, and he is Larry Gatlin. One would think the community of Seminole would proudly have a sign "advertising" that both country music superstars were born there by stating something like: "Welcome to Seminole, Texas...the birthplace of country stars Tanya Tucker and Larry Gatlin." However, they don't.

Tanya Tucker's grandmother (now deceased) lived in a community 40 miles from here in a Texas town called Denver City. Tanya would occasionally come to visit her grandmother. One resident there told me she saw Tanya in Denver City one time with Glen Campbell back when the two were a couple.

The local newspaper of my town, once had an article about Tanya coming here to visit her cousins by popping into their elementary school unexpectedly, thrilling her cousins' classmates. Interestingly, the school where her cousins attended was located in the lower income part of the city. Tanya's wealth was quite a contrast when compared to that of her cousins' family.

I have a couple of greatest hits CDs of Tanya purchased for only a buck from local thrift stores. Otherwise, I would not have them if I had to pay full retail price, LOL. As you may know, Tanya Tucker won two Grammys just this year for "Best Country Song" and "Best Country Album" which goes to show that it's still possible after being in the music industry for many years and having been nominated but falling short numerous times.

The song that won her a Grammy: "Bring My Flowers Now"

mdh - Very nice with LeBlanc and Carr as a duo and Lenny LeBlanc as a solo artist. I definitely remember "Falling". I don't, however, remember "Something About You", but it was very nice as well. That would be a WP! Regarding LeBlanc and Carr as a duo, I would compare them to Hall and Oates with Daryl Hall being the dominate vocalist (like LeBlanc) and John Oates (like Carr) being the lesser vocalist of the duo.

Could the connection between the artists you have mentioned be that they have performed Christian music as well?

KOG - Ah... A little personal package from the mailman ! Wow, what a story !
OWN - "Wild Heart of the Young". It amazes me how some artist (singer / songwriters) have had better success singing other writers songs.

Lenny LeBlanc - Yes, that was the connection. Many of the Artist I posted had Christian influences and in some cases just like or "America" friend Dan.... they stopped recording the music that made them mainstream famous and continue to follow their roots.

Lenny LeBlanc - I know it's the same song but had to add this.

Nice selection, mdh! I OWN only one CD of Suzy Bogguss, and it's of her greatest hits which, of course, includes her fine singing of "Someday Soon". She has a very lovely voice! For what it's worth, I had a former co-worker whose maiden name was Bogguss. She's the only Bogguss I have ever met.

THE LEFT BANKE

I don't own anything by The Left Banke, but I have always liked the subject song since about the age of 10. I remember hearing The Four Tops singing it as well.

Differing accounts by the co-writers as to the song's origin:

Michael Brown has stated that "the song is one of a number he wrote about Renée Fladen-Kamm, the then-girlfriend of The Left Banke's bassist Tom Finn and object of Brown's affection. She was associated with the band for a few weeks, and was described as a free-spirited and tall blonde. The song was written one month after Brown met her. 'Walk Away Renee' was one of a series of love songs the infatuated Brown wrote after meeting his newfound muse."

"However, co-writer Tony Sansone has given a different version of the origin of the song and contends that he is the primary writer. Sansone has stated in interviews that he wrote the lyrics for the song, and that he randomly chose the name Renée because the Beatles used the name Michelle in their hit song of the same name, and so he did likewise, choosing the French name Renée as the female object for the song."

The flute is part of the song because it was admired in The Mamas and the Papas, "California Dreamin'".

KOG - Great song..... I was to young to know this song when it was released but my Mom told me she knew I was a more Melencoly kind of kid. She said I was always moved by songs with more meaning even when I didn't know the meaning..... I love the Four Tops and Motown Music but I prefer this verson. As always, great Story ... :)

Excellent selection, mdh! Ahh, Alison Krauss and Union Station. I don't have anything by them but WP! I read that Alison Krauss has won 27 Grammys out of 42 nominations! That is astounding! She has the voice of an angel. I sometimes get her mixed up vocally with another female singer who I may feature later. I really like the song, "Baby Now That I've Found You". As a matter of fact, so much so, it leads me to my next musical selection.

THE FOUNDATIONS

Another group from my youth back in the 60s. Being that they made famous the song covered by Alison Krauss and Union Station, "Baby Now That I've Found You," I've selected the subject song. For many years I thought the song was sung by the Four Tops. I had heard they were formed to be their rival. I don't know how true that may be as I heard it stated so on the radio a few years ago. The Foundations were a multi-racial band who were credited as being the first successful soul group from England.

A bit choppy in parts: "Build Me Up Buttercup"

They did a nice job.
WP - I have them on itunes and Spotify

Alison Krauss - I've had the pleasure of seeing her a few times. Amazing voice :)

mdh - I remember quite well that Gerry Rafferty was a member of Stealers Wheel, but I wasn't aware who the other members were. After doing a little research I discovered the band was founded by Gerry Rafferty and Joe Egan. I probably WNP although I do enjoy their hits as well as Rafferty's solo hits. I remember hearing on the radio when Rafferty had passed away. I tried finding out how the band got its name, but I wasn't successful.

WALTER EGAN

The discovery that Stealers Wheel had a member named Joe Egan brought to mind for me a solo artist named Walter Egan. He had a few minor hits but the one below is perhaps his biggest. I have two of his albums. I first discovered him when he made an appearance on American Bandstand. It's a bit shocking seeing Walter Egan with solid white hair, but at least he still has a lot of it!

I do enjoy their hit songs which are numerous. You are clearly a devoted fan of them having seen them as often as you stated. I remember Dewey imitating the singing of the lyrics, "Let me go crazy on you..." during an interview when Heart shared the bill with America, LOL.

I discovered Jude Cole's music when a song of his was featured on a Coca-Cola cassette sampler. Since that time I have purchased several of his CDs. For what it's worth, he is married to the younger sister of Michelle Pfeiffer.

I'm of the opinion that some artist miss the curve a bit, in this case i think he was stretching the 80's a tad. Music was changing again in 90. I enjoyed his hits but I don't own any of his music but I will be adding some to my Spotify playlist now, so thanks for flipping my switch :)

TODD RUNDGREN

Rundgren helped raise Liv Tyler who had the last name of Rundgren until she changed it to her father's last name. I read that she only discovered Steven Tyler was her biological father at the age of 11. Prior to that time, she thought Rundgren was. She now claims both Rundgren and Tyler as her father.

Two of my high school classmates (Jim Abbott and Larry Sweet) have their names on a list (poster?) that was enclosed with one of the LPs by Rundgren. Jim told me if the first "so many" fans submitted their name, they would have it included with the LP when it was released. Specifically which LP, I don't remember.

mdh - "Old And Wise" is such a touching song! It's very nice! I had never heard it before. Colin Blunstone has a very sweet singing voice. I only know a handful of Zombies songs he sang such as "She's Not There," "Time Of The Season" and "Tell Her No". He does a wonderful job on "Old And Wise". Concerning The Alan Parson's Project, I was only familiar with a few songs such as "Games People Play," "Eye In The Sky, "Time" and perhaps a few other songs that were played as hits on the radio. I don't have any music by Colin Blunstone, The Zombies nor The Alan Parsons Project. They all three are WP. Thanks for directing me to their music! Oh, I do know that Colin Blunstone sang Russ Ballard's "I Don't Believe In Miracles" and have posted it here a couple of times in the past.

AMBROSIA

mdh - I don't know if you noticed who it was who was singing background voice on the Todd Rundgren song that I posted yesterday. I intentionally didn't mention it to see if you might comment about who the singer was. His presence leads me to my next musical pick. The background singer was David Pack of Ambrosia, and here he is singing lead in the following song:

KOG - Ambrosia - exellent choice. Back to my youth again, while most 13 year old boys at that time would be caught up in KISS, Eagles, Doobies, Pink Floyd etc. (not that I didn't like them as well), but I was drawn more to groups like Ambrosia, Bread, America, 10cc etc. they were more sophisticated and deeper. "Holdin'on to Yesterday" (1975) does't get much more impassioned. Thanks :)

I chose Dean Ford as an overflow from the Alan Parson Project. When you look at the Notable contrituters to the Project you'll see it's quite extensive. Parsons Produced many of these artist/Bands then cherry picked some to play or sing on his Records.

Excellent choice, mdh! I'm very familiar with that particular Marmalade song being that I was in junior high when "Reflections Of My Life" was very popular and often played on the radio. It brings back a lot of fond memories from that time period such as becoming an early teen and being very interested in girls and all the fun that surrounded it. I wasn't aware of who the lead singer was, but I now know it's Dean Ford who has a very nice singing voice. The video showing him singing as a young man versus a senior now was cool. It makes me a bit sad though knowing we're each growing older and are no longer the handsome and strong person we were in our 20s and 30s. I checked out some other Marmalade songs on YouTube. They were all very nicely sung songs with some as cover songs which I enjoy hearing how other bands sing songs made popular by other performers. WP!

MICHAEL JACKSON

I'm choosing Michael Jackson tonight because today (June 25th) is the 11th anniversary of his passing. Few remember today is also Farrah Fawcett's 11th year of her passing. Michael's death greatly overshadowed Farrah's.

A brief story that I mentioned here before is my knowing Michael's cousin who lives in my home town. His cousin has a business here that I visit at least once a week. I asked Hawk (nickname because his last name is Hawkins) if what I had heard is true about him being related to MJ. He said it's so. Honestly, I had much doubt about it even after he confirmed it. Two years ago when MJ's father passed (June 27), Hawk asked me if I had heard about "Uncle Joe". I know Hawk's uncle who lives here. I thought at first he was referring to his Uncle Bob because I mainly heard "uncle". I said, "No, what happened?" He replied that he passed away. I then realized Hawk meant MJ's father as I knew he was quite ill from news reports. I asked if he would be attending the funeral. He said he and his wife and their toddler would be driving out to California. That week when I stopped by Hawk's business, I asked his workers if he was in. They told me he left for California. I asked, "To attend a funeral?" They replied, "Yes". I thought to myself, "Wow, so it is true that Hawk is actually related to the Jacksons." When Hawk returned home, I asked him how the service went. He said everything went well. He told me his father was the minister at the funeral. Hawk then showed me a clip of the service, and I was blown away to see him and his family among members of MJ's siblings! It seemed totally surreal to me being that Hawk is someone I know yet he was related to one of the most famous singers in the world. He also showed me a short video of the car a particular singer owned who attended the private service. I saw the singer walking with someone who was leading him to his car. I easily recognized it as Stevie Wonder. Hawk said Latoya's daughter (nicknamed "Little Latoya") was in very hot water with the family because she leaked a video to TMZ of the private service. I assumed she did it for the money. A week or two later Hawk showed me a very thick photo album that he said he rarely shows anyone so I felt honored he allowed me to thumb through the album. There were numerous photos of the Jackson family in personal and private gatherings. Again, there was Hawk with the Jackson clan. A particular photo stood out to me. It was MJ sitting by himself in a living room chair taken with a Polaroid camera. I told Hawk the anniversary of MJ's passing is very easy for me to remember. I pulled out my driver's license to show him my date of birth. It matches the day of MJ's passing. Hawk was surprised.

Excellent choice, mdh! I read that Clint Black has had more than 30 singles on the US Billboard country charts, twenty-two of which have reached number one. Plus, his debut album "Killin' Time" produced four straight number one singles on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks charts! A few years back, I was informed that CB was scheduled to perform a free-to-the-public concert at the county seat but, unfortunately, it has yet to occur. He did, however, play a concert locally, but I wasn't able to attend. Besides America and Billy Dean, I have a ball cap with Clint Black's name on the front. To me CB looks like he could be the son of This Famous Person of Western Shows and Songs.

mdh - I OWN Firefall's debut LP.

There are bands whose first hit song is what really draws us to them, but after playing the entire album, it just isn't what we were expecting. I regret having to say that was the case for me with Firefall. I never purchased another one of their albums. That has occurred several times with my album purchases. I can think of at least three other artists where that has happened for me. It doesn't mean they aren't excellent artists. It just means they weren't of my particular interest after all.

My next featured selection will be another "one album purchase only" for me.

KOG - I can understand where your coming from. I have a few artist of my own :) Firefall was an aquired taste also. I enjoyed their 5 top 40 hits over the span of a few years and purchased their albums because as I went back and played them as like America songs, I found something I wasn't listening for in eailer years. Vocals, lyrics, guitars etc. They had 5 songs just outside of the top 40 also. I'll admit I preferred other songs that didn't get air play or weren't released as singles. I think that's normal. We see that here with America music discussions. Not everone agrees on certain songs.

Orleans - I liked the 3 tunes "Still the One" "Dance with Me", "Love Takes Time" ..... I also liked the song "Forever"
OWN - Orleans would fall in the category you described for me also :)

mdh - I don't hate the Cars' music, but I can't say I'm really a fan of theirs either. Personally, I think they're okay. I remember hearing on the radio that Rick Ocasek had passed away near the end of 2019 from heart disease. :(

I don't own anything by the Cars.

THE RASPBERRIES

I intentionally chose Todd Rundgren's "I Saw The Light" instead of one of his other songs such as "Hello It's Me" or "We Gotta Get You A Woman" to segue into the Raspberries. I was going to mention the following from the Raspberries Greatest Hits CD liner notes but got sidetracked until now:

Eric Carmen: "When the Raspberries were recording our first album, we were at Record Plant in New York in Studio B, and Todd Rundgren was in Studio A. Todd came by and stuck his head in the door and we happened to be mixing the song 'I Saw The Light.' Todd listened for a couple of minutes and then he left. Then the last song we had to mix that day was called 'I Can Remember.' Todd came by again and stuck his head in the door, listened and walked away. "Something/Anything" came out a month before the Raspberries' first album. The first track on the album was 'I Saw The Light,' and I thought, 'That's interesting, what a coincidence.' I listened to the song and it didn't really sound like ours, but lyrically it had some very similar things going on. Then the next song of Todd's album started out with this keyboard, and he was playing the exact chords to 'I Can Remember,' and the first line of the song was 'Do you remember,' and I thought, thievery. So I decided to get my revenge. My favorite song on his album was 'Couldn't I just Tell You.' So I sat down with my guitar one day and figured out that guitar part and reworked it and wrote 'I Wanna Be With You.' Then Todd came to Carnegie Hall when we played with Stories. I walked past him when we were sitting at a table and I said, 'I loved 'Couldn't I Just Tell You,' and he looked at me and said, 'That figures.'"

THE WONDERS

This song always reminds of The Rasberries song "I Want To Be With You"
I know it was a Movie song and it almost broke the top 40 back in 96
Adam Schlesinger recorded the demo with friend and producer Mike Viola and sang back-up, and a few months later, their voices were what moviegoers heard when the Wonders played “That Thing You Do!”
I think we both know the connection here with Dewey, Gerry and Adam my he RIP :(

mdh - Not being much of a movie goer, I wasn't aware of The Wonders. I assume it strictly a fictional band. The actual singers sounded very good. The band member who first spoke in the video I thought at first was FBI Director Christopher Wray, LOL!

CHRIS ISAAK

Saw Chris Isaak locally a couple of years ago. I'm very surprised he and I are only one day apart in age (same month and year). I thought he was easily 10 years younger than me when I saw him in person. He came down from the stage and performed just a few feet away from me. The following video appears to be a rehearsal.

mdh - You caught me! I intentionally didn't say WP or WNP. I was hoping to avoid saying WNP. I'm just not a fan of Chicago. I know a lot of people are their fans, but I'm just not. They were extremely popular when I was in high school. As a matter of fact, the high school pep band played a lot of their music because they were so popular. Plus, the pep band had a very good brass section.

Regarding ELO, OWN! Interesting that their greatest hits CD has "Sweet Talkin' Woman" as #7 on the playlist but "Evil Woman" as #1. The evil woman prevails over the sweet talkin' woman, LOL.

Cool video you shot even though it wasn't very long. I'm glad you were able to take your daughter to the concert. Buildin' memories! Do you live in the D.C. area?

BOB WELCH

From the internet: "Welch had undergone spinal surgery three months prior to his death. Despite the surgery, doctors told him his prognosis for recovery was poor, and he would eventually become an invalid. He was still in considerable pain, despite taking the medication pregabalin (Lyrica) for six weeks.

On June 7, 2012, around 6:00 am, Welch committed suicide by shooting in his Nashville home; his wife Wendy discovered his body. He left a nine-page suicide note and love letter for Wendy. He was 66 years old.

Wendy died on November 28, 2016, from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and heart disease, also aged 66.

Bob and Wendy Welch are buried beside each other in Memphis, Tennessee."

KOG - Good choice, I wasn't aware of his health problem. I knew he was snubbed by the HOF. Sad story ! About Chicago - Hey I understand, It's not everyones cup of tea. I have my fair share of big name artist that I can take or leave and some I just couldn't turn the dial quick enough... :) Haha
Evil Woman vs Sweet Talkin' Woman, it might be that EW peaked at #10 for 8 weeks vs STW at #17. Looks to me that Don't Bring Me Down was their most successful US Billboard song at #4
Internet - From 1972 to 1986, ELO accumulated twenty-seven Top 40 songs on the UK Singles Chart, and fifteen Top 20 songs on the US Billboard Hot 100. The band also holds the record for having the most Billboard Hot 100 Top 40 hits (20) without a number one single of any band in US chart history. In 2017 the ELO line-up of Wood, Lynne, Bevan and Tandy were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

This is for Mr. Welch - Written and sung by Bob for Fleetwood Mac

When I hear part of the melody in this song it reminds me of a famous Band you already posted in this thread. Hmmm ? The Melody is repeated several times.

Nice choice, mdh, going with the Grass Roots. OWN! The songs of the Grass Roots were among my favorites when I was in junior high being that they were most popular at about that time. I have both the LP and CD of their greatest hits. Both contain 16 songs each; however, three songs are different. On the LP, which is from 1971, the three songs are "Feelings," "Walking Through The Country" and "I Can Turn Off The Rain". On the CD the three songs are "Two Divided By Love," "Glory Bound" and "The Runway". The CD was manufactured in 1996 so I assume after 1971, the three songs on the CD outsold the three on the LP, but that's merely speculation on my part.

Some years ago, lead singer Rob Grill came to town to perform a free outdoor concert sponsored by the city. He put on a great show and even did a meet and greet afterwards, but I didn't stay for it as I was with two other people and didn't want them to have to wait. It was basically like attending a Grass Roots performance with Grill singing their greatest hits. He sang most of the concert while seated on a stool. He explained he was in need of hip surgery but was putting it off. He performed a couple of cover songs which I really enjoyed. One of them was Edison Lighthouse's "Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes" which was a song we talked about here. The other was by a group I plan to select soon.

Is the song with a part of the melody as you mentioned from "Feelings" an America song by Dan?

THREE DOG NIGHT

As a junior high kid, I would sometimes get the songs by Three Dog Night and the Grass Roots mixed up for some odd reason. Plus, it didn't help with each of them having a song with a somewhat similar title, the Grass Roots, "Walking Through The Country" and my featured song by Three Dog Night.

A number of years ago, I attended a concert featuring Three Dog Night and America. America performed first. After the concert, I thought it was a good thing it occurred in that order being that Three Dog Night put on a much more rockin' show which really surprised me. Had it been the other way around, it would have been a bit of a "letdown" having the mellower band close the two performances. After the show, I went to the merch table to purchase an America t-shirt and spoke about the two shows with the merch worker. He informed me the two bands alternated regarding who performed first. I found that interesting.

KOG - another great story ..... thanks for sharing I find myself analysing songs added or replaced in later releases also. I'd think your right about your theory.
The Grassroots song - No, it's not Dan.... the secret is the I believe the xylophone ? that little riff is just enough that it sounds like a very famous British Bands song from the 60's.

Great choice picking Three Dog Night - "Out in the Country" is definitely one of my favorites.
Not sure how long ago you saw 3DN and America together but in recent years Dewey and Gerry have let the Kids cut loose and I wish they would expand their playlist to keep certain rockin' song on the playlist instead of rotating OUT Green Monkey, The Border, etc.
Last year I saw them and they added Greenhouse back in but dumped Green Monkey... While I'm on a roll here I'll add that I really miss not having Billy as the lead guitarist. Steve is a great and talented guy but Bill kept it to the roots ! He played the songs just like Woodzy did and better, cleaner, faster ! I can't even get into the Sandman's end riff anymore cause it's just blended together. You can hardlly hear Dewey's part. "Hollywood" is the same way. I really wish he could pull off the origional way it was performed. I'm sure he can but I believe he just wants to make it his own.

Happy 4th of July to you, mdh, and to anyone else who may be reading this!

What a wonderful song written by Jimmy Webb that you selected. And, what a beautiful voice Art Garfunkel has! Other than having Simon and Garfunkel's greatest hits on CD, I don't own anything by AG as a solo artist, but I certainly WP! Between Simon & Garfunkel, I definitely prefer Art Garfunkel's work. I remember as a freshmen in junior high, the school newspaper asked a few of us students what our favorite song was and I said it was "Bridge Over Troubled Waters".

LEE GREENWOOD

One 4th of July a few years ago, Lee Greenwood came to town to perform a free outdoor afternoon concert sponsored by the city as part of its July 4th celebration. I was very surprised that Lee Greenwood selected my home town to attend being that he is in extremely high demand to sing during the 4th. I had brought along my mandolin in hopes of having it autographed by him after his performance.

After his last song, I rushed from my seat with mandolin in hand hoping to catch him as he exited the stage. To my delight, he stopped to sign autographs for only about a half dozen or so other fans who had the same idea in mind. I had brought along with me a new black Sharpie. When it came my turn, I offered my Sharpie to LG, but he wanted to use the one he already had in his hand and pushed my hand away as he accepted the mandolin from me, LOL. His signature on the mandolin is one of my proudest to have which contains only country music artists.

KOG - Best Pick for the 4th ! Good show Mate :)
As always, another great story ! Funny thing about the Sharpie.... I'll always remember the first time I got an autograph from an artist they told me to bring a well used sharpie next time. Said it laid down on the pieces they were signing. I'm sure you have that Mandolin in a special place :) I liked the new recording of God Bless the USA

S&G - I think they harmonized together wonderfully. I too preferred Garfunkel's solo performances and voice for sure. Simon was a gifted songwriter and together they were great. I don't own any Paul Simon recordings.
I believe I owe you a response from the ELO discussion. Yes we live in MD and DC is about 45 minutes on a good day LOL

I'll give you another shot at the Feeling's song.....Hope you have/Had a great 4th......Enjoy !

mdh - I trust you survived the 4th okay and had a nice one. All I had to do this year to observe fireworks was to simply step outside. I have never seen so many in the night sky as last night! I'm just amazed how much money some people send purchasing fireworks. As a kid it was a lot of fun popping Black Cat firecrackers. On a rare occasion one might explode in your hand after lighting it and before being able to toss it. Man, would it hurt!

Anyway, back to music. That was a good song sung by Waylon Jennings. I have never purchased any music by him. I remember when I was in college, he performed a concert on campus on one of the weekends. I didn't attend, but there was plenty of talk about WJ starting the show but having to end it soon after it began due to his being too intoxicated to perform! The talk was all over campus. I can't remember positively, but I would assume all attendees were given a refund. Personally, I'm not much of a fan of Waylon although I'm a big fan of country music. I remember he had an album entitled, "Crying and Waylon" which I thought was quite clever as it contained his song, "Crying". Honestly, it would be a WNP for me. A friend of mine named his son "Waylon" after WJ. Plus, they lived in the country and were permitted to name their own street being that they were one of the first to live on that particular street. Actually, I should say it was a road. A dirt road as a matter of fact. He, as you may have guessed, named the road, "Waylon".

Concerning "Feelings", give me another day to try to figure it out. :)

THE BELLAMY BROTHERS

Was able to see the Bellamy Brothers at a free outdoor evening concert held 20 miles north of my home town. It's actually in the town where I work. It was sponsored by the town as part of their "Evening on the Plaza" series of concerts.

Again, with mandolin in hand and their greatest hits LP, I met Howard and David Bellamy when they held an intermission to do a meet and greet. When they were autographing my two items, I informed them that my two brothers are named Howard and David. I don't know whether they believed me, but it's true. What are the odds of that, right?

I like the clever lyrics of the following song:

"If I Said You Have A Beautiful Body"

KOG- Yes the 4th was fine. We typically would go to the park for the annual fireman's fireworks but they were cancelled because of the CV19 mess. That said your right, it's amazing how many folks sent up signals in our neiborhood. Haha..... about 11p we walked outside and the sky was full of smoke and the air was thick of gun powder smell.

WJ- I just used that particular song for the 4th. I like a few of this songs but do not own and album or CD.

The Bellamy Bros. I OWN the album "Strong Weakness" (1982) I remember their first song "Let Your Love Flow" and enjoyed many of their hits along the way. I have a personal Greatest hits collection of the Bellamy's on itunes and Spotify. To answer your comment about "If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body" It's Cleaver and kind of creepy.... I remember a teacher in my high school who use to say that to the girls. I didn't think much of then but definitely ......not appropriate.

VONDA SHEPARD

mdh - You and others here are probably well aware of Vonda Shepard as a regular on Ally McBeal, but since I have never watched even one episode of the show, I have no idea of the character she portrays nor the songs she sings on the show. I only know of her from a CD I came across a couple of years ago. It features her singing a song you picked recently, "Hooked On A Feeling", and one I picked a few weeks ago, "Walk Away Renee". Here is her cover of the latter:

Seems were on the same Ally McBeal page .... nope never saw a single episode either :) I remember she did a nice duo with Dan Hill "Cant We Try" 1987. I do not OWN any of her material but will definitely add some of her songs to my Spotify. Thanks for heads up ! WP
"Feelings" - I think part of the instrumental melody sounds like The Rolling Stones song "Under My Thumb"

OZARK MOUNTAIN DAREDEVILS

I purchased the LP based strictly on the following song which I like, but I didn't care too much for the rest of the album. Unlike today where you can listen to an entire CD online before purchasing it, I took a chance, but it wasn't what I had hoped.

mdh - I OWN six of Janis Ian's CDs with one of them containing "At Seventeen" and performed live on a 2-CD release, "Working Without A Net". I picked them all up at a local thrift store. The front covers of three of the CDs are autographed: "To Dulce & Tere - Janis Ian". The fourth one is autographed on the actual CD itself so I could easily remove the two names with an alcohol swab and still have Ian's autograph on it! Apparently, the autographed CDs no longer meant much to "Dulce & Tere".

SOUTHERN PACIFIC

The featured song was part of the soundtrack for the 1989 movie, "Pink Cadillac", starring Clint Eastwood and Bernadette Peters. The movie had small cameo roles by Jim Carrey and Bryan Adams. Another Southern Pacific song was part of the soundtrack which was, "Reno Bound". Notice the two band members who were from another band prior to their forming Southern Pacific. I was really surprised that one of the members from the other band was the lead singer on this song as he was never a lead singer with the other band.

Too bad the other songs from "It'll Shine When It Shines" weren't more like it. Also, I mentioned the lead singer of Southern Pacific's, "Any Way The Wind Blows", was never a lead singer for the other band. That is, as far as I know based on the last release of theirs that I have. It may have changed with subsequent releases that I don't have.

KOG - I liked the song "New Shade of Blue" back in the day. I'll admit I wasn't aware that SP had so many talented members. Knudsen and McFee from the Doobie Brothers and David Jenkins Lead vocalist from Pablo Cruise. Very cool.... I do not own vinyl or cd just itunes and Spotify but WP :)

JAMES GRIFFIN
Best known for his work with the band Bread

In 1970, Griffin and Rob Royer – under the pseudonyms Arthur James and Robb Wilson – wrote the lyrics for Fred Karlin's music for the song "For All We Know," featured in the film Lovers and Other Strangers. It won the Academy Award for Best Song. This song was later covered by The Carpenters on their third album.
This is a song he wrote and sang for Bread.

38 SPECIAL

38 Special was one of the featured musical acts during the week-long county fair a few years ago. I didn't attend as their performance was on a weekday and would have interfered with a good night's sleep for the following work day. I was told by several attendees that I missed a very good concert. I now wish I would have attended.

KOG - Nice selection .... If you own or like 38 special music you probably missed a good show. I have seen them a few times over the years and they reproduce very well live. I haven't seen them since Donnie left the band in 2013 for health reasons.
OWN- Special Forces and Tour De Force on Vinyl and other CD's as well.

CHILLIWACK
Probably best know for their 1981 song "My Girl (Gone,Gone,Gone)"

THE KINGSTON TRIO

The Kingston Trio was Shasta's favorite singing group during her younger days. She would have been 68 this past March. Last month was the second-year anniversary of her passing. In honor of her memory and in remembrance of how much she contributed to this America fan blog, I'm featuring the following Kingston Trio song:

Growing up in a family that had a radio in every room in the house.... yes, including the bathroom. If the radio wasn't playing, the console stereo was spinning Vinyl. :) My sister was almost a decade older than me and she had a large collection of vinyl. mdh - Chad and Jeremy had a great sound! As with you, I have an older sister also by nearly a decade (specifically by 8 years) who played a lot of the music from that time period on the family stereo. Another duo who I remember well from that era was also very popular. I would often get them confused with Chad and Jeremy being that their sound was very similar. They are my next featured performers. I don't have any music by them nor by Chad and Jeremy, but I surely enjoy their sound and WP!

PETER AND GORDON

"A World Without Love"

mdh - What famous fictional character from the late 90s does Peter Asher resemble in the above video? The character is portrayed as living in the 60s.

From Wiki: "McCartney wrote the song when he was 16. When he moved into the London home of his then-girlfriend Jane Asher in 1963, sharing a room with her brother Peter Asher. Asher asked him if he could use the song after Asher and Gordon Waller had signed a recording contract as Peter and Gordon. McCartney described John Lennon's reaction to the song: 'The funny first line always used to please John. 'Please lock me away –' 'Yes, okay.' End of song.'

Lennon said of the song that 'I think that was resurrected from the past. ... I think he had that whole song before the Beatles. ... That has the line 'Please lock me away' that we always used to crack up at.'

McCartney did not think the song was good enough for The Beatles. As such, the song was never released by the Beatles, and the only known recording of the song by any member of the Beatles is the original demo of the song performed by McCartney, which is now in the possession of Peter Asher. As of January 2013, Paul McCartney's demo has been leaked on YouTube. It is 30 seconds in length, but offers a rare glimpse into the song's origins. The clip was played at Asher's most recent string of concerts."

Peter and Gordon - Nice choice, I liked their music. "Go To Pieces" was another fine song by them. The story with McCartney and Lennon was interisting. I personally think "A World Without Love" would have fit nicely into their library :) BTW - my sister is 8 years older than me also.

THE SEARCHERS

WIKI - The Searchers tied for being the second group from Liverpool, after the Beatles, to have a hit in the US when their "Needles and Pins" and the Swinging Blue Jeans' "Hippy Hippy Shake" both reached the Hot 100 on 7 March 1964.

mdh - Prior to your posting, if you asked me which group sings "Love Potion Number 9" and "Needles And Pins", believe it or not, I would have said, "I don't know!" I know the songs quite well, but I never knew it was The Searchers. Likewise, if you asked me what songs The Searchers sing, again I'd have to say, "I don't know." Crazy, I know! I liked both songs a lot and can remember them well on the radio back in the day.

KOG - So many songs and so many Groups/Artist it's hard to keep up or remember them all. That's one nice thing about the modern era, you can figure out almost anything eventually from the internet.

Cool Thermos, looks like you can pick up the lunch box now thanks to Ebay ;)

Johnny Rivers - I like his music. I believe "Swayin' to the Music" was his last top 40 hit (1977).
Adding to your post: From Wiki - Johnny Rivers career total is 9 Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and 17 in the Top 40 from 1964 to 1977; he has sold well over 30 million records.... Not to Shabby :)
I knew he had quite a few good songs but didn't know he had 17 top 40 hits.

They are best known for their chart-topping singles "You're the One", "Five O'Clock World", "Magic Town", and "Turn Around, Look at Me" and a few other tunes. The group appeared on American Bandstand, The Tonight Show, and The Ed Sullivan Show. They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2001.

THE SPIRAL STARECASE

From Wiki:

"The group evolved from a four-piece instrumental group called the Fydallions, which formed in 1964 in Sacramento, California, for an Air Force talent contest. After leaving the Air Force, the band went on the road, playing five-hour lounge jobs on the Las Vegas circuit. The Fydallions, now a quintet consisting of Dick Lopes (saxophone), Bobby Raymond (bass guitar), Harvey Kaye (keyboards), Vinnie Parello (drums), and Pat Upton (guitar and lead vocals), were noticed by the A&R representative for Columbia Records, Gary Usher, while they were working in El Monte, California. Columbia signed the band, but insisted that they change their name. The band was renamed after the movie The Spiral Staircase, but with a deliberate misspelling."

mdh - I had always thought when I heard "Silence Is Golden" on the radio back in the day that it was the Four Seasons. I know it was the flip-side to the Four Seasons' "Rag Doll" originally. I guess I saw the FS singing it on television one day and just assumed it was them who I was hearing on the radio each time. Very interesting! Thanks to my aunt, I still have the following Tremeloes song on a 45 when she gave it to me back around 1967 which was written by Cat Stevens:

CLASSICS IV

They were originally the Classics, but were informed after releasing their first single under that name, there was already another act known as the Classics who had released a record. They derived their name from the Classic drum set. Since they had four members, they settled on the Classics IV.

Two of their major hits:

"Traces"

and

"Stormy"

I OWN the classics IV on Vinyl, 8 track (haha) and CD

GARY LEWIS AND THE PLAYBOYS

About 15 to 20 years ago, I saw them at a free local evening concert which was sponsored by the city. The show was cut short by at least half due to a thunderstorm that had rolled in.

From Wiki:

"This Diamond Ring" is a 1965 song written by Al Kooper, Bob Brass and Irwin Levine. It was first recorded by Sammy Ambrose on Musicor #1061, then by Gary Lewis & the Playboys[1] on Liberty #55756. Lewis' version charted first, #101 on the January 2, 1965, Billboard "Bubbling Under" chart. Both versions charted on January 9, Lewis still at #101 and Ambrose at #117. Ambrose dropped off the charts at that point, but Lewis made #65 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart the next week (January 16) and his version continued to climb until it reached #1 on February 20, 1965."

KOG - Sorry about that ;) ... It's like sitting in the parking lot with your blinker on and the car pulls out of the spot and the car coming the other way steals the space... LOL - I was fortunate to see ARS 3 times in the late 80's and early mid 90's. I remind my daughter that her first concert was an AMERICA concert in momma's womb.... great show in 93'
but she's also was with us at another fair when we saw ARS. Ronnie Hammond had come back. The sound was back ! Unfortunately - from WIKI - On December 28, 1998 singer Ronnie Hammond, who had battled alcoholism and depression off and on over the years, got into a confrontation with police in Macon, Georgia and forced an officer to shoot him. Hammond was seriously injured, but survived the injury and dealt with the depression. Today only Dean Daughtry (keybourds and backing vocals) is still alive and active with the band 1971-2020 He was also the keyboard player for ? the Classics IV.

Gary Lewis - I enjoyed the bands greatest hits and OWN one of their Gts hits LP. Also itunes and Spotify

Well, the only two songs I recall of his are "I'd Want You To Want Me" and "You And Me And A Dog Named Boo". I remember the latter getting a lot of airplay when I was a freshman in junior high school. It was extremely popular back then, I remember well!

PS: mdh - I liked reading your comments about your daughter being in the womb at the America concert then being at the ARS concert. Also enjoyed the mention of Dean Daughtry having been with both the Classics IV and ARS!

FREDA PAYNE

She is best known for her song, "Band Of Gold" which made it to #3 on the charts.

Her follow-up song that I truly don't remember hearing at #12 on the chart was "Bring The Boys Home".

"'Bring the Boys Home' was a hit for Freda Payne in 1971 during the Vietnam War era. It was an anti-war song which was aimed at the sending of troops to fight in an increasingly unpopular war. The song came out at a time when soldiers were returning to America dead and in body bags. A higher than normal amount of the soldiers were black. The soldiers were only boys at the age of 20, which was the average age that many of them were killed. In spite of the healthy amount of airplay it received in the US, the US Command from the American Forces Network banned it. The reason was that it would be of benefit to the enemy."

mdh - Nice choice going with Herman's Hermits! Did you know (according to the internet) Peter Noone's actual name is "Peter Blair Denis Bernard Noone"? What a long name, huh? Has to be one of the longest ever, LOL!

My favorite song of Herman's Hermits is probably, "There's A Kind Of Hush", which I believe is the flip side to "No Milk Today" or vice versa. I have that 45 in one of the closets as part of the collection of 45s my aunt gave me over 50 years ago.

I never really understood what the song title, "No Milk Today", actually meant. According to one person, Alan Oldie (whoever he is), says:

"In England, milk was delivered to the door in glass bottles and there was usually a regular order (Two pints please). The empty bottles were rinsed and left on the doorstep for the milkman to pick up with the next delivery. It wasn't unusual to leave a note in the top of a bottle for any variation ('one extra pint, please, we have company' or 'No milk for the next week, we are away').

'No milk today' was the most common, usually because for some reason the previous day's hadn't been used. Of course this matches in with the general thrust of the song. Only one person is living there now, the other has left, so not so much milk is being used, hence 'No milk today, it seems a common sight But people passing by don't know the reason why'.

And in case you're wondering, 'just two up, two down' describes a small English terraced house with two main rooms on the ground floor and two bedrooms above. I was brought up in a 'three up, two down' terraced house.

So, the final meaning is that a couple were living together in a small, very working-class house, but their love made it a palace. But now she has left him and he is alone with only his memories."

Saw Peter Noone on two different occasions here in my home town. If I remember correctly, he performed approximately 7-8 years between each concert. Both were held outdoors at night. Peter Noone is quite the entertainer with his fun and charming personality! I remember his guitar (or bass) player liked to spin around while performing. Something I noticed during the latter of the two performances was the number of t-shirts Peter Noone tossed out to the audience. Must have been around ten. My two sisters, my dad and I attended the second performance together. The seating was first come, first serve so we had front row seats. Most all the t-shirts Peter Noone tossed out to the audience were just heaved out with no intended recipient. One, however, he pointed directly to one of my sisters and gently tossed it to her. My guess is that he chose her because she is quite attractive, I must say, and surely caught his eye from the stage. The back of the t-shirt had the names of the cities the band was touring and the dates. It was funny seeing my small home town of about 35,000 among the names of large cities we all know well. On the front in red, white and blue was the Union Jack. And lastly, Peter Noone said he often gets mistaken for actor Nick Nolte.

They began as a duo formed by Allan Clarke and Graham Nash. Perhaps, my favorite Hollies song is the following which featured Elton John on the piano. It reached No.3 in the UK in October 1969, and No.7 in the US in March 1970.

GERRY AND THE PACEMAKERS

From Wiki: "Gerry and the Pacemakers were an English beat group prominent in the 1960s Merseybeat scene. In common with the Beatles, they came from Liverpool, were managed by Brian Epstein, and were recorded by George Martin."

We know that Gerry B covered one of the GATP's songs which was, "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying." My favorite of their, however, is:

SAMMY JOHNS

WIKI - "Chevy Van" is a 1973 song, written and sung by Sammy Johns with instrumental backing provided by Los Angeles-based session musicians from the Wrecking Crew. The song was a hit single in the United States and Canada in 1975, reaching #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and becoming a million seller. It was played primarily on AM Top 40 stations in the 1970s.

I have never owned a Chevy van (nor any van), but I do own a white '87 Chevy El Camino. Have had it since 1998. Strangers around town often ask me if I'd sell it, but I tell them, "It's not for sale but thanks, anyway."

"Warnes recorded the song 'It Goes Like It Goes' for the 1979 motion picture 'Norma Rae'. The song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Her 1979 single 'I Know A Heartache When I See One', was a Top 10 Country hit and reached the Top 20 on both the Pop and Adult Contemporary charts."

"She has won two Grammy Awards, in 1983 for the Joe Cocker duet 'Up Where We Belong' and in 1988 for the Bill Medley duet '(I've Had) The Time of My Life'".

mdh - Ahh, the lovely voice of Karen Carpenter, OWN! I have their greatest hits on CD. Way back when (maybe when I was in junior high?) I had purchased the Carpenter's 45 of "We've Only Just Began". I can remember where I was on the day of her passing. She was only 32.

I had gone to a local record store that day and mentioned to the two owners about KC's passing. One of the two said something like, "No, what a terrible loss!" Unfortunately, he was being very sarcastic. Funny thing was... about two years later he passed away of AIDS! "No, what a terrible loss!" Said with sarcasm and not because of the cause of his death but because of what he said about Karen Carpenter's passing.

ANN MURRAY

Another great female singer from about the same time period as Karen Carpenter. I remember playing "Snowbird" a number of times on the juke box of the family restaurant back in the day.

In 2011, Billboard ranked her 10th on their list of the 50 Biggest Adult Contemporary Artists Ever.

Ann Murry - I remember many of her hits, One strikes me today, with all the turmoil going on in this world we sure could use "A Little Good News" (1983). Billboards ranking is quite the honor :)

PLAYER

WIKI - Their biggest hit, "Baby Come Back", released in late 1977, rose to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1978 and was a chart success in other countries. Their follow up single, "This Time I'm in It for Love", also peaked at No. 10 the same year. Among several notable accolades, Player was named Billboard's Best New Singles Artist of 1978. Eric Clapton invited them to open for him during his 1978 North American “Slow Hand” tour.

PROCOL HARUM

From the internet:

"Procol Harum: formed in London in 1967 and are most famous for the hit A Whiter Shade of Pale. In an interview, lyricist Keith Reid, who was always listed as a full-fledged member of the group on their albums, recalls the genesis of their name:

'It's the name of a cat, a Siamese cat. It's the pedigree name, and it belonged to a friend of ours, just somebody that we used to hang out with when we were forming the band. One day, somebody pulled out the cat's birth certificate and said 'Have a look at this', and the name of the cat was Procol Harum. And somebody else, in fact a chap called Guy Stevens who was quite instrumental in Gary [Brooker, the singer and pianist] and myself getting together in the first place, said, 'Oh, you must call the group Procol Harum'. And we just accepted that. We never even questioned it, never even thought if it was a good name, we just went ahead with that suggestion."

KOG - Sorry your having computer issues. I was hoping you were up and running so we could continue...
Today instead of a music video I thought I'd add one of my favorite forgotten albums. I think it's shows a more sophisticated and mature Dewey and Gerry.
WIKI - HOURGLASS is the 13th studio album by American folk rock duo America, released by American Gramaphone in 1994. This was America's first new studio album since 1984's Perspective. Two singles were released from the album, "Young Moon" and "Hope", but did not chart in the U.S. The songs did receive more airplay in Europe. The song "Hope" became a theme song for the TJ Martell Foundation and was
recorded by a group of country music stars in a fundraising effort for the Foundation. The recording of "You Can Do Magic" included here is not the hit version but a re-recording that is very similar.

Actor/musician Bill Mumy contributed to this album, co-writing "Sleeper Train" and "Greenhouse" and providing additional guitar work.

mdh - So sorry I didn't get back with you sooner. My computer is pretty much a goner. I'll have to have it serviced. Strangely, the only website I'm able to access is this one!

Regarding "Hourglass", I thought it was an excellent CD. I was so surprised and disappointed that it didn't have any songs that charted. I do know that Gerry received a Grammy nomination for "Hope" via the recording the country music artists did for the Martell Foundation. Plus, I liked D&G's re-recording of "California Revisited" as "Everyone I Meet Is From California".

I remember finding "Hourglass" at the record store not knowing it was to be released. It was such a wonderful surprise! I also remember being very impressed with the whole release and all of its wonderful songs!

KOG - While we wait for you to return, I'm gonna continue down the America road. Looking back at mid 90's music I feel it was all over the place so it's sad that the guys couldn't find a place on BB's top 100. There was a lot of competition and I liked the two songs they released as singles "Young Moon" and "Hope", I feel they are the best two cuts on the Album but I think they dove into a sea of youth.
Top 100 Rock and Roll Songs of 1994

I don't know who decides how many songs are released but they may have stopped short. I feel that "Mirror To Mirror might have been a good choice as it has an upbeat and perhaps a bit angry tempo sound.

Here's something you and others might be interested in viewing if you haven't seen it already. I watched it about 6 months ago. It features two America songs..."The Story Of A Teenager" which was originally the movie's title until it was changed and "It's Life." The movie is definitely from the 70s as you'll be able to tell, but I enjoyed it even though it was very hokey in many parts.

mdh - I'm so sorry that I've been away so long and haven't gotten back with you regarding the loss of sound on my computer. I have yet to take my computer in to have the sound problem checked out. The reason being is that I have retired from work since my last posting here. Therefore, I spend a lot of time on my computer and don't want to be without it as would be the case if I were to take it in to see what the issue is with the sound. Instead, I have simply been using the closed caption option while using YouTube. Using closed caption on music videos doesn't work very well, LOL. It has definitely given me an appreciation of what it's like for people who are deaf or hearing impaired in some way.

The following are tracks #1 and #5 from a CD I recently purchased. I couldn't decide which of the two tracks to present here so I'm presenting both but not knowing what they actually sound like on YouTube. It's from the trio consisting of Roger MCGuinn, Gene Clark and Chris Hillman who were members of the Byrds.

Seems to have a slight Disco influence from that time period, add in the adult contemporary sound of the late 1970s songs with middle of the road 70s rock.. with a mix of folk.. Kinda covers it !

I can say I have that recording. Well, I should actually say I had that in the form of an LP. Not all of the songs for the live performance appear on the record, however. I have since sold the LP to a fellow America fan. Here Is The Link To The LP From Off Of SteveL's America Fans Website

I must say that when I saw the name of the brothers, I at first thought you meant the Alessi Brothers whose album I bought back in the early 80s at the local Kmart from a batch of albums for sale for a dollar each. "We Got To Get It On Again" is a nice song.

Below is a song from an album my eldest sister had when she was about college age which would put me around junior high school age. I came to own the album from her and still have it to this today.

I saw him perform on American Bandstand many years ago which led me to purchase the only LP that I have of his which is "I'm No Hero." I believe it contains his hit song, "A Little In Love." Coincidentally, his birthday was yesterday; he turned a whopping 80! For some reason when I think of Cliff Richard, I also think of the following artist. Here he is singing with George Michael a Daryl Hall written Hall & Oates song:

I had purchased the following artist's LP new from another $1 bin. It contained his hit song that's featured here. Sadly he passed away in 1994 from a brain tumor at the age of only 43. He co-wrote James Brown's big hit, "Living In America." Hall and Oates covered his song on their "Our Kind Of Soul" CD which was an entire collection of soulful cover songs. Unfortunately, in my opinion anyway, I think H&O's version lacked the energy of the original.

mdh - I remember Badfinger very well when they first came out and some people thinking they might really be the Beatles. I can understand that. Personally, I can hear sounds of the Beatles in their music. I don't own a single item by Badfinger, however. Regarding the Beatles and as odd as it may seem, I like their earlier music a lot but not so much their latter. As you may remember, the Beatles had two releases on LPs of their greatest hits. Each was a 2-album set. One of the album covers was trimmed in red which was their earlier works and the other trimmed in blue which was their latter. That's pretty much is the dividing line for me regarding the music that I enjoy most by the Beatles. I'm saying all of this to explain why I don't own anything by Badfinger. They remind me of the Beatles music in their latter years. With all of that said, I do enjoy hearing Badfinger's hit songs on the radio, but again, not enough to have ever purchased anything by them.

Coincidently, I came across a band just the other day whose music and band name I had never heard before. Below are three links pertaining to them and their music. The first two are two of their songs. Personally, I wouldn't purchase their music and for the same reason I stated above. But, I really do like their two songs as posted below:

mdh - I did a little research on Reina Del Cid as follows:

"Her stage name originates from references to Spanish literature: her guitar is nicknamed "El Cid", named after the Castilian nobleman of the same name, and her name "Reina", meaning Queen in Spanish, the Queen of her guitar."

She has a very sweet singing voice! It reminds me of Jewel which is a good thing. Her cover of "Sister Golden Hair" is very nice. I remember in the past having come across it on YouTube. Thanks for featuring both of her songs here.

My featured artist today is the 70s band, Silver. Unfortunately, they were a one hit wonder with only one released album. I purchased it back in the day. Too bad they weren't successful enough to continue their career as Silver. Their sound reminds me a lot of the music of Poco. As you surely know, their one and only hit was "Wham Bam Shang-A-Lang". Their second release was "Musician (It's Not An Easy Life)". Although I think it's a nice song, it didn't go anywhere. Instead, I think they should have released my featured song below. As most everyone here knows, Silver member John Batdorf co-wrote America's "You Could've Been The One" from "Alibi".

Awesome, mdh, the selection of Dan Hill and Vonda Shepard performing as a duet. I really enjoyed that! For some unknown reason, I have never purchased or have ever owned anything by Dan Hill, but I certainly am open to it now. I remember his 70s hit, "Sometimes When We Touch." And Vonda Shepard, I have her CD which features songs sung by her from the "Ally McBeal" television show. DH and VS do a masterful job in their song that you featured...thanks!

P.S. I remember learning years ago that Dan Hill was the first husband of country singer Faith Hill

KOG - I remember you featuring VS sometime ago. After posting I hoped that it wasn't the same Video haha. I was not aware of the DH and FH connection. Thanks for pointing that out.
Glad your sound has returned :)
I see you didn't feature an artist this time. I'm sure you have good reason.

Sorry about that, mdh! I meant to get back here with my next artist, but I didn't make it back before you did.

Gary Allan is a very nice choice! I like his sound. He came to town for a concert a couple of years back, but being that he was somewhat new at the time, I didn't attend which I now know was my loss. PW!

His sound reminds me a lot of the person I picked to feature today. By the way, I liked that 1968/1969 black El Camino in the video. It's one of my favorite classic vehicles. Can't say car being that it's classified as a pickup truck or so it's printed on the title of my '87 El Camino. It's actually half car, half truck.

My artist today isn't seen much at all on TV these days or heard too often on the radio anymore. There's just so many new country artists and the ones who had a touch of fame seem to have slowly disappeared.

KOG - Ah yes, DW Daryl Mark Williams "Jacob's Ladder", "Places I've Never Been", "I Do (Cherish You)", "Don't Laugh at Me", "She's in Love", and the cover version of Brian McKnight's "Back at One". Two songs originally recorded by Wills, "Somebody" and "What Hurts the Most", were later hit singles for Reba McEntire and Rascal Flatts. I very much enjoy Marks work.

DAVID NAIL
Best known for songs like No. 1: "Let It Rain" (featuring Sarah Buxton) and "Whatever She's Got", plus the top 10 hit "Red Light"
are good songs but what got my attention were songs like "The Sound of a Million Dreams", "Half Mile Hill", "The Secret", "That's How I'll Remember You"

Again, very nice, mdh! There are so many popular and very talented young country music singers these days that it's a bit hard to keep up or keep track of them all. For me David Nail is one of them. My next featured artist will very likely be that way for you. Truth be told about David Nail, I had never heard his name until your posting, but his songs sound familiar to me. Of course! Because of his #1 and his other Top 10 hit!

The next artist that I've selected was born in my home town but moved away when he was a young child. He and his family returned where he started his sophomore year in high school. His father was my older sister's classmate since elementary school.

One time when I was returning back to work after having lunch at home, I found the shirt of a baseball uniform in the middle of the street with a clothes hanger attached. I stopped to pick it up and saw that it had "Ashley" on the back of it. The Ashleys lived a couple of blocks from me and around the corner. I returned the shirt after work. It belonged to the younger brother of Jared Ashley. He had driven off with it on top of the car when he was a member of the local college's baseball team.

For my next 3 or 4 artists, I'll be featuring a few of them who were either born in my home town or were born elsewhere but raised here.

Ahh, the smooth sounds of the (Young) Rascals led by the vocals of Felix Cavaliere! It's such a shame that Cavaliere was never able to launch a successful solo career. He attempted to from what I've read in the past. Just doesn't make sense that he wasn't able. So very odd. I don't any CDs of the Rascals, but that is something that needs to change! Thanks mdh for that blast from the past as they say.

My next featured artist is another person from my home town. I knew he was a member of a famous singing group, but I wasn't exactly sure which one until I asked around. As it turned out, I was shocked to learn who his parents were as I knew them from our attending local garage sales. I didn't know their last name but only that we (his mom, his dad and I) were garage sale attendees just about every weekend for several years. And then one day, his mom came into my workplace (a hospital) along with her youngest son. When I saw their last name, I asked if they knew singer Wayburn Dean. The young man said, "Yeah, that's my brother. He'll be in town this weekend."

He's with the following gospel group singing lead in the first video. He has since become a solo artist.

JEFFREY OSBORNE

"On The Wings Of Love"

Great singer singing a very uplifting song! I don't believe I have anything of his but am definitely likely to in the near future. Thanks

My next featured artist is again someone from my home town of about 38,000 give or take. I'm not that much of a fan of his but am featuring him as the third of four musicians who are from where I have lived all my life except the years I went off to college.

He was born in Abilene, Texas but came here as a youth when his parents moved so his father could pastor a local Baptist church. I used to see him a lot on television for a number of years and wondered who he was. So, I googled his name and was totally shocked to learn he was from my home town!!! He was a regular on television as a member of the gospel singing group, the Gaither Vocal Band. I've seen him only one time in person when he came to perform a Christmas concert about ten years ago or so. His singing is good enough, but I wouldn't likely purchase anything by him other than that one CD that I have. I know one thing about him for sure and it's I wish I had his hair! LOL

Best of luck on your deer hunt, mdh! I hope you bag a big buck!

I remember The Seekers very well back in the 60s especially one of their other huge hits which was "Georgie Girl". I remember "I'll Never Find Another You" as well. Both were nice-sounding hit songs for them. WP!

RYAN BINGHAM

Some call him the "Bob Dylan of Country Music". I would have to agree. Personally, I'm not too much of a fan of Dylan. Must admit that I don't own a single piece of music by Ryan Bingham.

He co-wrote the song below which earned him the following:

Academy Award/Oscar in 2010 for "Best Original Song"

Golden Globe in 2010 for "Best Original Song"

Critics' Choice Movie Award in 2010 for "Best Song"

Grammy Award in 2011 for "Best Song Written For A Motion Picture or Television"

Welcome back, mdh! Glad to hear the hunt was a success. Many times just the fun and getting away is worth the trip alone. It reminds me of a bumper sticker one might see: "A bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work." The same could apply to hunting, no doubt.

Regarding Ryan Bingham, I've never watched even one episode of "Yellowstone" but a number of people have told me I should and that it's a very good show. I never knew Bingham was on the show as a singing cowboy. Frankly, as for myself and his music, I WNP. His sound just isn't one that appeals to me although I'm happy for him and his success. One last thing about him is that his parents were my classmates in high school. His dad was the varsity quarterback and his mom was a varsity cheerleader. They were the typical high school sweethearts. Unfortunately, both have passed on and his mom never got to see his success.

I like the sound of the Climax Blues Band. I would purchase their music although I don't own anything by them. As a matter of fact, the video you posted is the first time I've every seen them perform. I see the lead singer is also the sax player. It reminds me of a few other singers who cam play the sax such as Dan Seals/England Dan, Eddie Money and Daryl Hall.

I can't think of another hit song my next featured artist has had. I'll have to do some checking to see. In the meantime, here's one of my favorite songs from the '70s. Oh, I must make this comment: the lead singer is very brave to wear that shirt and pants. I think they're pants and not a skirt, LOL:

I always liked the song "Brandy"

mdh - After reading your message, I wasn't sure if the most recent hunting adventure resulted in more success. Did it? I hope so for you.

Yeah, definitely 70s clothing. The lead singer of the Bay City Rollers appeared to be wearing pants much too tight and his "roller" was showing through! (LOL)

I don't own anything by them, but I've enjoyed listening to their hits on the radio back in the day. I haven't heard any of their songs on the radio in many years. WP

My next featured artist is a band from Canada. They had only one YouTube video showing them performing live, but it was of limited quality so I didn't choose it. Their band name is derived from A.A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh, whose "proper" name is Edward Bear. I didn't know that until I discovered it today. I have only one of their albums. I'm not sure if they ever released any additional ones.

I liked Edward Bear "Last Song" I think I have a K-tel album with that hit song on it. Definitely have it on Spotify and Itunes

Wiki- REDBONE is one of the rare Native American bands to notch a lasting top 40 hit. In fact, they are the only Native American band that comes to mind. ... If you want to get picky, Redbone is not a pure one hit wonder band. They actually charted at #21 with “The Witch Queen of New Orleans” in 1972.

mdh - Thanks for the explanation about your second hunting trip. There's always next year as they say.

I've always liked Redbone's hit song, "Come And Get Your Love". I really enjoyed viewing the video especially with the Native American dancer before the start of the song. Speaking of which, the Native Americans from all across the US convene annually in my state and in the city of Albuquerque for their dancing displays and native wear. They refer to the meeting as their annual powwow. I've never been, but I understand it's quite an awesome experience to see and hear. Concerning Redbone's other hit, "The Witch Queen Of New Orleans", I never realized until now that it was their song. WP

Your featuring of Redbone brings to mind another 70s Native American music artist. She perhaps is best known for being a folk singer from the 60s. Below, she is singing her big hit, and written by her, made most famous by Elvis Presley.

KOG - I read up on Albuquerque Texas. The little Ghost Town got it's 15 min. of fame from gunfighter John Wesley Hardin. it's interisting history. Sounds like a great place to have a powwow. We have a Western Theme Park in Berlin MD. It's been here since I was a child.
There were Native American Descendants, horses, tepees, stage coaches even a railroad going thru the town. There was even a gun fight at 12:00 everyday. It's not as authentic as it was but thats to be expected I guess these days.

Buffy Sainte-Marie : Yes, Nice choice: As we have discussed our siblings before, I have the 45 that was given to me by my older sister.

Yeah, mdh, "Christmas In California" is a very nice song. I like all the songs from America's Christmas CD. I think it's extremely well done!

I've included a video from last year's Gathering of Nations Pow Wow held in Albuquerque. I think you and others will enjoy viewing a part of it. There are numerous other videos of the event, but I've included just one, and it appears to be a dancing competition among Native American men from many, many different tribes from across the United States. I think it may have been held for several days, but I'm not 100% sure. I know they didn't have a gathering this year due to Covid as the Navajo Nation in New Mexico is sadly one of the largest groups of people in the United States who have been infected by the virus. The Pow Wow video is best started at about time marker 1:15. As a closing note, I think I read online some time back that Native Americans are the only people who may legally possess feathers from an eagle without having to have special permission or a license.

Nice choice with The Mavericks, mdh! I have always enjoyed their sound, but I've never purchased any of their music. I should and will!

I saw the following male artist in concert locally during December not that many years ago. I remember he had a life-size dancing Santa on stage.

I was surprised to learn Chris Isaak and I are only one day apart in age. Same month and year but he easily looks 15 years younger than me. That could be that I think I look older than my age. It used to be the opposite until I hit 45. It was crushing when my older brother's classmate, who I had previously never met, asked me how much older I am than my brother. David is 5 years older than me. He and DanP were born on the exact month, day and year.

At the concert when I first saw Chris Isaak's guitar player, I thought it might be Raul Malo when Raul was slimmer and trimmer. I had a front row seat. Chris Isaak came off the stage and sang a couple of songs while on the floor among the audience which I thought was very cool.

I remember seeing this next guy circa 1988. He was well established by then but was no match that evening, touring and opening for Reba... I was embarrassed for him because of the rude and lifeless crowd. He actually asked the audiance to give him a break.

Merry Christmas Eve and Christmas to you as well, mdh (and to all others here)! I have never heard Ed Ames' "The Ballard Of The Christmas Donkey". I enjoyed it very much, thanks! When Ed Ames is mentioned, I often think of the time he was on "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson and the following demonstration as posted. As it turns out, the answer to Carson's last remark is that Ames actually is! Folks our age surely remember Ames as Mingo on the TV Western, "Daniel Boone".

Ed Ames On "The Tonight Show" Back in 1965

One of my favorite modern day Christmas songs is the following written and sung by its original writer and singer followed by Toto's Joseph Williams with his cover which I think gives the song a different sound. It's my understanding this is Japan's most popular Christmas song:

The always smooth and mellow vocals of Andy Williams! Believe it or not, mdh, I have two albums of Andy Williams but that wasn't until about two months ago. A local thrift store threw away boxes of albums probably in the amount of 100 to 150. They were in a dumpster that wasn't very tall so I took them home. Most all the albums were ones that our parents most likely would have enjoyed listening to. I gave all but about 20 of them to a friend whose son collects and sells them at a local antique and collector's mall. A few of the other ones I kept were ones by Eddie Arnold, Brenda Lee, Lawrence Welk's "A Christmas Song", Mac Davis, Mel Tillis, Johnny Rodriguez, Ray Charles, Tom Jones, Roger Miller and several others.

When I think of Andy Williams, I also think of the Osmonds who were often guests on his television show back in the 60s and I believe is how they first became known.

As with most all high school graduating classes, the class picks a class song upon graduating. In my class' case, it came down to two songs. One was by a fellow graduating classmate. The song he had written was, "The Wind Song", which he had performed during the sohool's annual talent show called, "The Golden Revue" as our school colors are black and gold. The other song in the final two was Jim Croce's "Time In A Bottle". To this day if I were to ask a former classmate what our class song was, the answer is often the latter instead of the correct one. Funny how that is. Perhaps, my final Christmas-related selection:

JIM CROCE

"It Doesn't Have To Be That Way"

and

A Jim Croce song covered by his son A.J.

A Christmas love lost song at it's best.
Funny that you talk about your school colors. My high school colors were Black and Gold also, Northeast Eagles. Our Class song was "Sail On" by The Commodores.
Oops, had to come back :) A.J. did a nice job covering Dad's song "I Got A Name"

From your lead I'm gonna hang on to your coat tails and add another CROCE song that is hauntingly sad.

mdh - My high school is also the Eagles!

It sure makes you wonder what great music we all missed out on with the early passing of Jim Croce. Many years ago, I had purchased one of his albums. I haven't seen it in many years. It must have been among some of the LPs I gave to my brother. I do have Croce's "Greatest Hits" on cassette, and yes, I still have a working cassette player in one of my vehicles!

I think I'll continue with Christmas music up till New Year's Day. The following is an interesting Christmas song done up with the likeness of the Beatles as covered:

Hello mdh,

Steven Curtis Chapman is perhaps one of the most popular and successful male artists in the world of Christian music today. I have several of his releases either on CD or cassette. That was a nice Christmas song you posted. The subject matter of the song reminds me of news I heard a few years back about a tragic accident involving one of his adopted children, a daughter. The accident reminds me of a very sad accident that occurred here a number of years ago. The victim was the elementary-age daughter of one of my classmates from high school. The school bus dropped the girl off in front of her house as her mom waited in the front yard. School papers flew out of the girl's hand and landed under the bus. She was attempting to retrieve them when the school bus driver placed the bus in gear. So very tragically, the young girl was crushed by the wheels of the school bus in front of her awaiting mom. The girl's father passed away I'm guessing maybe seven to eight years later due to cancer. At least now he and his daughter are together again. Because of the accident, local school bus drivers are not permitted to drive away until all the children departing the bus are safely visible to the driver.

Below is a link to an article about the accident of Steven Curtis Chapman's daughter:

Nice song by Josh Groban, mdh! I do have one of his releases on CD. My sister who lives in NYC surprised me with an autographed CD of Josh Groban some years ago. She said she waited in line there for the CD for about 2 hours with the line winding around several street corners. I wish she hadn't felt like she needed to do that for me, but I appreciated her for thinking of me and her waiting so long.

Gosh, most New Year and New Year's Eve songs are so depressing. I selected the one below as it's a bit more upbeat than most of them. It's a flashback to 21 years ago.

Happy New Year to you...mdh...and to anyone else here reading this!

mdh - I have always liked the sound of Spanky and Our Gang! I tend, however, to get them a bit mixed up from time to time with The Seekers when I hear each artist's music for some odd reason. I suppose that I hear what I think is a similar sound and that's perhaps why. Nice choice! I don't have any music by Spanky and Our Gang, however.

I like their name and I enjoyed watching the show by the same name. Man, those kids sure were talented and especially for their ages. I believe Spanky McFarlane may have been a member of a latter day version of The Mamas and The Papas singing the part of Mama Cass and Mackenzie Phillips singing in the place of Michelle Phillips. I remember Michelle Phillips criticizing Mackenzie for being a part of the group saying something like she shouldn't ride the coattails of someone else's success. I thought that was catty of the elder Phillips. Speaking of which, I saw a somewhat recent video of her. I was shocked and saddened to see her beauty was no longer there. It's amazing yet very sad how we all age and so often end up looking nothing like we did in our younger days. Literally, thank God we're restored to our prime in the next life as has been reported by those who have seen a glimpse of heaven due to a near death experience.

I've decided for myself to omit whether I'd purchase each featured performer's music as they all are worthy to have their music purchased without a doubt.

My next featured artist is someone who was the opening musical act for another performer I saw in concert who I may feature in the near future. She's originally from San Antonio and is the youngest of 13 children!

mdh - I had previously heard the song "Dixie Chicken" but never knew who sang it. Now that I know, I must say I don't know much about Little Feat other than hearing their name. Interesting to me is one of the artists mentioned in the video is Jesse Winchester. He moved to Canada to avoid the draft, I learned from reading, today. He also wrote a song sung by my next featured artist that charted on Billboard's Hot Country Songs reaching #3.

Remember, when I featured Tish Hinojosa, I said she was the opening act for another artist who I planned to feature in the very near future? Little did I think at the time that the "near future" would be now because of seeing Jesse Winchester in Little Feat's video.

Singing a song written by Jesse Winchester is my next artist who I saw on the same bill as Tish many years ago and best known for his hit song, "Wildfire". I have seen him more than I've seen America in concert. The last time I saw him, he did a meet and greet after the show. I intentionally got in line last so I could have him autograph about 6 or 7 of his album covers. I mentioned to him what B.J, Thomas had told me while autographing his album covers for me was he hopes he doesn't see them on eBay. When I mentioned that to MMM, he said in an extremely kind manner that he's not in the least bit concerned about that. As the last person in the meet & greet line, he gave me one of his large posters at no charge and autographed it as well. The cost of the poster was listed for $20. Nice, nice guy!

KOG - I'm a fan of MMM ... :) As a kid I Liked "Wildfire" In the early 80's MMM had quite a run. One of my favorites was "Still Takin' Chances" One of the songs you selected "Long Line Of Love" was intristingly enough written by a guy I previously selected. Paul Overstreet. It was also released as a single. S-K-O, originally known as Schuyler, Knobloch and Overstreet, was an American country music group composed of Thom Schuyler, J. Fred Knobloch and Paul Overstreet..

Nice choice, mdh, with S-K-O. The only person I'm familiar with is Paul Overstreet. Honestly, I don't even remember them as a group by name, but I remember hearing "Baby's Got A New Baby" on the radio back in the day. I like that song and the vocal quality!

Reaching back to 1975 is a trio of brothers as you may possibly remember. They had a very silly comedy/variety show back then called, "The Hudson Brother's Razzle Dazzle Show". It was hard to take their music seriously even though they had a nice sound. One of the brothers, Bill Hudson, is the father of actress Kate Hudson. They, however, have a very strained relationship as she claims her stepfather Kurt Russell as her father. Her mother is, of course, Goldie Hawn. Back in the day (1974), I purchased one of the Hudson Brothers' 8-track cartridges and still have it to this day.

mdh - I enjoyed watching The Partridge Family on TV back in the day. I had purchased one of their albums back then but gave it to my sister many years ago. It was a very sad ending to David Cassidy's life. Such a shame he had his demons with alcohol and perhaps other substances. Hard to believe at the time of his death he had only a financial net worth of $500K with all the success he had in the early part of his life as a teen idol. I do have one of his releases on CD.

Continuing with some more bubblegum music are a couple of songs by perhaps the most bubble gum of them all. First is The Archies theme song. And, secondly, the singer behind The Archies' biggest hit:

Great choice of song, mdh! Regarding Peter, Paul and Mary, as a kid I really liked their song, "Puff The Magic Dragon". Like with "A Horse With No Name," it was rumored to have been a drug-related song. For many years I thought "I Dig Rock And Roll Music" was sung by The Mamas And The Papas, and they were singing about themselves with the mention of their name in the song. It sounds so much like them of me. I do have PP&M's "Greatest Hit's on CD.

Yes, Sweet's "Love Is Like Oxygen" is a very nice song! The title has me thinking of a song lyric by Hall & Oates from one of their songs off their album that's colored silver. It makes a similar reference to oxgyen. I'll have to investigate that.

By the way, how was the weekend hunt?

The 75 Grand Prix, this is crazy I owned the GM sister car. I had a '75 Monte Carlo. Burgundy with a white top like the one in Holloween.

KOG - About the trip, it's always a pleasure to get out in the woods.
Fortunately with meat already in the freezer from previous trips to the hunting property, I again passed on several opportunities.
I enjoyed the comradery of friends around the camp fire in the evenings. Thanks for asking again... :)

mdh - Funny how as a kid we enjoyed playing a record over and over. That was the case with me and "Frosty The Snowman".

Glad you had an enjoyable time with the guys during your hunt.

LOL, about you having a '75 Monte Carlo. My '75 GP was metallic blue with a white landau top. The interior was white with bucket seats and a center console. My dad bought it new for me. List price was just a tad under $7,000. He offered the dealership $6,000. I thought there was no way they would accept it, but to my surprise and delight, they did! Drove it during my college years and later. It was a great car.

I had heard the Dazz Band's song, "Let It Whip", a number of times on the radio but never understood that was what they were singing, LOL. Cool song! I don't own any music by the Dazz Band.

Along the same sound is the following. I remember seeing Michael Jackson in a video wearing a pair of those fringy pants one of the members is wearing:

Speaking Of Michael Jackson -

Although Temperton would continue writing new songs for Heatwave, he soon became better-known for his songwriting for other artists, penning award-winning songs for some of funk's biggest names, including Rufus, The Brothers Johnson and George Benson. He also wrote for Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones, but his most famous partnership remains the one forged with Michael Jackson, writing three songs for his 1979 Epic debut Off the Wall – "Rock With You," "Off the Wall" and "Burn This Disco Out", and three songs for the 1982 Thriller LP, including the title track.

mdh - I have definitely heard "Groove Line" on the radio but was never aware who the performer was. Now knowing it's Heatwave, I have to admit I have never heard their name as a group. While listening to "Groove Line", I thought it sounded a lot like "Boogie Nights" so I went on YouTube to see who sings the song. What I found out made perfect sense. It was Heatwave! You mentioned Michael Jackson's "Off The Wall" LP. I have it; it's the only MJ music that I have although I like his many hits.

My featured artist first made his television appearance as a frequent dancer on "American Bandstand". His album I do have and it's quite good. He passed away some years ago due to cancer-related AIDS. I read that for 17 years, sadly, his grave was without a headstone.

Nice choice going with Janet Jackson, mdh! I watched the video very closely from beginning to end and was highly disappointed. I didn't see one single wardrobe malfunction! Maybe next time as they say, LOL. I did, however, see a risqué grab of her by one of her dancers! I don't own anything by JJ nor have I every heard that song of hers before. It was nice.

My next featured artist is someone whose music I also don't own, but I like his hits. It's quite interesting to me to hear what music a performer features on their sound system before their concert starts. In the case of the one and only concert I've ever attended of Hall & Oates, they played the music by the following artist:

mdh - "Lotta Love" is a wonderful song by Nicolette Larson. I do happen to own that LP from which it came. I hadn't been aware until just yesterday, Neil Young is the writer of the song! I was very surprised to learn that. I read that Nicolette had succumb to brain edema due to liver issues. Sad.

My next featured artist, most unfortunately, also passed away from a brain-related cause of death which was a brain aneurysm while she was sleeping. She died at the age of 47. Nicolette at age 45. Both much too young.

In the late 70's they were one of my wife and I's favorite bands.
Most folks only knew their mainstream songs like "Isn't It Time" and the featured song. "Everytime I Think Of You" "Broken Heart" was an exellent rock album. (1977)

As a solo artist, he has released ten studio albums and is best known for the 1984 hit single "Missing You", which reached No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and the top ten on the UK Singles Chart. He was also the lead vocalist for the successful rock bands The Babys and Bad English. I know that John had a relationship with Alison Krauss and re- recorded "Missing You"

Excellent choices, mdh! I really like John Waite's singing voice, and Alison Krauss has an angelic voice. I had no idea that the two had a past relationship. That was a very nice duet as well! They come from such different musical circles so that really surprised me. I have one of John Waite's musical works as Bad English.

Diana Ross made the following song popular in the late 60s or early 70s. I didn't know for a number of years it was a cover song of my featured artists whose version I think is better.

KOG- Nice choice... I like motown music. "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" was a great song. I enjoyed it's use in the movie Stepmom. I too prefer the Marvin & Tammi version also.

mdh - What a classic! I really don't know much about Otis Redding, however. Recording the song on the first take is very impressive! Interesting is the artificial sound of the seagull. I can't think of Otis Redding's other hits without having to google them, unfortunately. I must admit though that I think Michael Bolton did a great job covering the song.

Also a great classic by the following group who got their name from their manager, Eddie O'Jay. They originate out of Canton, Ohio. Who doesn't like this song?

mdh - I've never purchased any music by Buffalo Springfield, but I have of some of their members. I understand the band, interestingly, got its name from a steamroller made by the Buffalo Springfield Roller Company. This is what Wiki has to say about the song in one "brief" sentence (LOL):

"Although 'For What It's Worth' is often considered an anti-war song, Stephen Stills was inspired to write the song because of the Sunset Strip curfew riots in November 1966—a series of early counterculture-era clashes that took place between police and young people on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, California, beginning in mid-1966, the same year Buffalo Springfield had become the house band at the Whisky a Go Go on the Sunset Strip./"

The previous group reminds me of a very pleasant song from my junior high school days. I purchased the 45 back then and still have it. Written by Graham Nash as it's stated:

"Nash recalled his inspiration for the song occurring during a Moroccan vacation he took in 1966. On the trip, Nash traveled by train from Casablanca to Marrakesh. He began the journey in First Class, surrounded by people he found to be uninteresting—as he described it, they were all 'ladies with blue hair.' He decided the compartment was 'completely (f-ing) boring,' so left his seat to explore the other train carriages, and was fascinated by what he saw."

KOG - Nice choice... I know that CSN formed in 1968 after performing together. Crosby had been asked to leave The Byrds, and Stills' band Buffalo Springfield had broken up. Nash left The Hollies. they had Their first album, Crosby, Stills & Nash, that was released in 1969, they had two Top 40 hits, "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" [#21] and "Marrakesh Express" [#28]. Mr. Young was added pre 1970 and their next Album which is the one I OWN was Deja Vu.

Jajuba - Thanks for contributing. Jethro Tull - Good choice...

To quote other peoples words - Their music comes from another time and place, and transports you there...

Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Jethro Tull. All in the same breath.

This guy is incredible. Feel so cheated that I didn't get to see this live. Perhaps the most talented stage presence ever, and so dedicated to his audience.

That's quite a unique song by Bread, mdh! I had never heard it before. It sounds like it could have been a country song. If released tomorrow by a country artist, perhaps, it could be a hit with the current state of governmental affairs!

My first time listening to them. I enjoyed "It's gonna be okay" also.
Thanks for the introduction. Looks like I'll be adding to my Spotify songlist.

mdh - I had never heard of Michael Franks previously. I like his vocals! Very nice song.

Many years ago when cassettes were still being used, I sent in an offer off of a Coca-Cola 6-pack for a sampler with a number of artists who were new. They included a couple of performers such as Paul Young, Celine Dion and my next featured artist whose CD I ended up purchasing many years later.

Bootcamp was one of our local rock bands, popular in the early 1980s. Their songs included "Victim", "Hold On to the Night", "Fire in the Hole". They were one of the first artists whose videos were shown on MTV's first day on air. Bootcamp originated in Baltimore, Maryland and had a loyal following there and in New York City, at various times sharing the concert bill with The Tubes, Squeeze, The B-52's and Split Enz.

mdh - I listened to Bootcamp's other songs as well. The band has a nice rock sound. I can understand their popularity in Baltimore and NYC. Quite an honor to be featured on MTV's first day of airing. I watched a lot of MTV back in the day and recorded many of the videos on VHS.

The following is another musical feature who had a variety and comedy show back in the late 70s. Their host was a guy by the name of Jeff Altman who starred in many of the shows' skits. It was a silly show much in the style of The Hudson Brothers. The following duo is originally from Japan where they had their beginning. They have somewhat of a similar sound to ABBA according to my ear. Sort of embarrassed to admit I purchased one of their albums back then and still have it.

Wow, mdh, I hadn't heard "Tired Of Toein' The Line" in many, many years. If you had asked me who the singer is, I would have been stumped! It's a nice song with an entertaining video. Interesting, too, is how I had thought the correct word was "towing" but "toeing" is actually the correct spelling. Again, learned something new here.

My next artist's real name is Michael Lee Aday and was born in Dallas. I have him featured singing a cover song familiar to many of us. Not sure why he (nor America for that matter) would ever want to cover the song especially in this case as it seems so contrary to his image.

P.S. I didn't know Jeff Altman graduated from John Hopkin's. I only remember him as a comedian prior to his joining up with Pink Lady for their variety/comedy show.

KOG - I see that Meat Loaf, due to obligations with Arista recorded the Blind Before I Stop (album) in 1986 and released "Special Girl" as a single in 1987. His version charted at 81 in the UK but not here in the States. America's version was released in 84 and reached 106 on Billboard's Bubbling Under and number 15 on its adult contemporary charts in October 1984. I liked both versions. I'd never heard Meat Loafs version until you posted this. Gerry's version is softer and ML had a more 80's background sound to it.

I remember Bat Out of Hell his 1977 Album. Funny I believe it was derived as a musical, a futuristic rock version of Peter Pan.

I OWN the Bat Out of Hell album and have other singles on itunes and Spotify.

Thanks, mdh, for the information you provided about "Special Girl" pertaining to both Meat Loaf and America! The songwriter has his original available for viewing on YouTube as well.

I don't own anything by Grand Funk Railroad although I enjoyed their hits a lot on the radio. I remember seeing Mark Farner quite a bit on the 700 Club as he was like DanP each having left their bands and having a successful solo career as a Christian artist. There's another person from the world of rock who also did the same, but he hasn't had as much success as Farner and Dan in the latter endeavor.

You may possibly remember my next featured artist for his career in the 80s as both a singer and an actor. I've also included a two part story about his discovery of a look-alike son he didn't know he had.

Robyn, I just added Cindy Alexander to my spotify playlist ... Thanks for the introduction. She has a very nice voice. Reminds me of a cross between 3 ladies ... Martina McBride, Terri Nunn of the band Berlin and Christina Amphlett of the band Divinyls.

I'm sure this video has hit this site before but because of the pamdemic and the shutdown of concerts. I thought I'd post this one again.
Hopefully the America concert I have tickets for in August will go off without a hitch since being rescheduled .... :)

In remembrance of Christine McVie with her singing lead in what is probably my favorite Christine-on-lead-vocals Fleetwood Mac song. She passed away today. From what I had read in the past, she was very content not being the center of attention in the band and welcomed Stevie Nicks with that in mind when Nicks joined on. "Little Lies" was co-written by Christine and her then husband Eddie Quintela. She reportedly had a net worth of $105M compared to Nicks' $120M; Lindsey Buckingham's $150M; Mick Fleetwood's 30M and John McVie's $50M.
