My favorite Dan Peek song
Posted on: 04/17/2012 07:07 PM

I've been listening again to my Horse with No Name CD(the one that started it all!) and have hit the repeat button on Donkey Jaw(Dewey on lead vocal). I remember hearing it for the first time way back in college and thinking what a genius Dan Peek was for writing such an incredible song. All these years later, this song still makes me smile.

Donkey Jaw is a classic, but my favorite Dan Peek song from the first album is Never Found the Time. It might be my all time favorite Dan song.

BTW, the Highway box set includes a version of Donkey Jaw with Dan singing it.

My favourite song (today ;-) is Dan's cover of the Beach Boys/Brian Wilson track "I Know There’s An Answer" from Dan’s Crossover album.

Dan was always a big fan of the Wilson brothers. In my opinion, Dan respected the music so much, his version of "I Know There's An Answer" turned out to be even better than the original Beach Boys track.

It's too bad the Crossover album is not available anymore.

Roady, when I downloaded "Crossover", that song wasn't on the tracklist. Only 7 tracks. There must have been a copyright issue.

Favorite Dan America song - "Rainy Day'. For me personally, it made me aware that there was more to the group than "Horse" so I went out and bought the LP. 40 years later I'm still buying America, Dan and Gerry's music.

Dan (solo) - "You're My Savior"

Dan certainly got better with time.. I like his songs on the first album - and if I had to pick one - kinda liked Jet Boy Blue...His Holiday stuff fits perfect and everyone I meet is maybe their best rock-n-roll song ever...Have to think about it - but the two rare ones for me are It's Life and Saturn Nights...Very cool songs.

I had the original cassette of "Crossover" that I bought at a christian bookstore back in 1987. Had it transferred to CD years later. I remember when the download was offered via Dan's site several years ago. Too bad it was an abbreviated version of the original. As albums go, it was probably my least favorite of his 4 original Christian albums from that period. But the title track is a real keeper, even to this day. Here's the track listing:

Crossover
I Will Not Be Silent
I Know There's An Answer
His Own
My Jesus
Get Ready
The Night
Press On
The Last Of Me

SteveO

Steve, likewise when I bought Dan's "Electro Voice" LP/CD combo last year, replacing my cassette.

Sometime before buying the combo, I mentioned to Dan that, to me, the final track on the cassette - "All Things Work Together For Good" - sounded very much like the ending to
"Sister Golden Hair" and asked him if it was intentional? He said 'No'...but he would listen to both versions again.

When I received the LP/CD combo, it was accompanied by a letter from Product Manager, Brian King saying -

"Dan specifically chose to replace the final track with a song he felt was better than the final track on the original album. "On Wings On Eagles" is the replacement track, a song he wrote for the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews."

I've always wondered whether Dan was a bit nonplussed about my comparison........

A pity. It was one of my favorite songs on the album.

Some years back and out of pure kindness, Dan had sent me a CD he had prepared with both "Crossover" and "Electro Voice" songs on it. Interesting is how he labeled some of the songs as opposed to the way the titles appear on the two original releases. Here are the differences with the original titles first followed by the way Dan had labeled them:

From CROSSOVER:

"His Own"......"He Takes Care of His Own"

"My Jesus"....."I Feel Fine All The Time"
"Get Ready"...."People Get Ready"
"The Night"...."The Night Is On Its Way"

From ELECTRO VOICE:

"A New Song"..........."I Love You"
"Solid Ground"........."Standin' On Solid Ground"
"Not My Will".........."Thy Will"
"His Master's Voice"..."You Call My Name"
"The Rapture".........."When He Comes Again"

My favorite America songs written by Dan: "California Revisited," "It's Life" and "In The Country."

Dan's best music/songs were from his later CDs, "Guitar man 1 & 2". The first 4 Christian CDs were so typical, boring. Chris Christian clones. Dan recorded other "Christian music" (See "All American Boy"). The stuff with Peace was in between.

Favorite song "The Hill" (autobiographical?).

I liked a lot of his newer stuff too. I really liked his songs on the second Peace CD, though the sound quality was not the best, especially "Revolving Door".

"Heartland" from Bodden Town is excellent as is just about every song on Guitar Man.

In my opinion, "All Things Are Possible"(1979) and "Doer Of The Word" (1984) were his best solo albums. His voice was fantastic, and the sound was very much like what you would have expected out of an America album. For me, later albums like "Bodden Town" and "Guitar Man" were sketchy; some songs I liked, some I didn't. I had somebody in the music business remark to me once that what Dan probably needed on those later albums was a good producer.

After the split with America, Dan seemed to prefer working on his own for the most part. He only did two albums with producer Chris Christian before going on his own. He did work with Marvin and Gentry on a few projects, but he was in control of those projects. Having a producer tell him what he should be doing seemed to rub him the wrong way.

With that said, I still think Electro Voice and Guitar Man 1 were his best solo efforts. Though I agree that Guitar Man is pretty raw and probably would have been improved if he had worked with a producer. Bodden Town and Driftin were inconsistent. Some songs were good, others not so good.

On Dan's blog I mentioned his "Coconut Tree" [off "Driftin'"] and how much I thought it would have been a great America track with D&G on background vocals. He said that he was very proud of that song.

"Train Comin'" off Dan's "Guitar Man 2". Amazing guitar and vocals.

This is probably my favorite song from Guitar Man 2. It is really good. I did not realize that anything from Guitar Man 2 was available on YouTube. I thought those songs had been lost when Dan's web page went down. Thanks for sharing!
