Revisiting Dan's solo albums
Posted on: 08/04/2016 10:39 AM

I have been listening to Dan's solo albums on my way to and from work. It had been years since I had listened to most of them. I have found them to be better than I remembered. Especially Bodden Town.

It did not make that much of an impression on me when it first came out, it was ok, but not one of my favorites. Maybe my tastes have matured over the years, but I really like most of the songs on it.

Guitar Man is still my favorite of Dan's later albums. It has a rawer feel to it (with the exception of his cover of Nashville Cats, which is still my least favorite track on the album).

Guitar Man 2 is also very good. Too bad it is no longer available. It, along with his last album, All American Boy, were only available as downloads from Dan's website and were never released on CD or on other sites.

I know All Things Are Possible was his biggest solo hit, but it was my least favorite of his CCM albums; I always thought Electro Voice was his best. But again, after listening to All Things a few times, my appreciation for it is rising. There are some really good pop songs on it, especially Ready For Love, which was the follow-up single to the title track. For some reason it did not catch on in the US, but it did in Canada - it reached number 7 on their AC chart.

I guess I am mellowing in my old age and my musical tastes have changed at least a little.

Dan's first 4 solo albums are his best. "Bodden Town" was a shock to a lot of his fans; I was told by at least one guy in the biz that it sounded like Dan could have used an outside producer on that one. For me, there are moments on both "Guitar Man" and "Bodden Town" that are good, but there are several songs that aren't. His last recorded song, "Kiss Me On The Waves" found Dan in better vocal form, and that one is rather catchy...

I agree, his CCM albums have better sound and production than any of his later solo work. I think most of his later solo recordings were done at home or at somebody's "home" studio, because some of them sound like demos rather than polished, final studio recordings. But I still like most of them.

As a Dan Peek fan I consider it lucky that he released so much material over his solo career. "All Things Are Possible" remains my favorite but I certainly can relate to other person's selections on the subject. Tom Peek recently told me that he considered "Bodden Town" his top pick. I recall Dan saying somewhere (maybe in his book) that he just wanted to have complete control over both production and distribution of his music.

Tonight on Australian "60 Minutes" the final story was an interview with Barry Gibb and family members about the release of his new solo "In The Now" and subsequent world tour which kick starts Down Under next April.

For Dan, Barry Gibb, Paul McCartney etc, their love of making music is quintessential, perhaps the core to their existence and we should embrace that and take it for all it's worth.
I truly don't give a bugger about how their vocals stand up to "father-time". That these amazing musicians, many in the twilight of their careers, still take the time to release new material for their fans and public is very rewarding and appreciated.

Bluey.
