50th Anniversary "The Collection" Demos
Posted on: 12/15/2019 02:09 AM

For those of you who have not purchased America's 50th Anniversary "The Collection" CD (such as myself), here are its three demo versions. Personally, they help me appreciate their finished versions:

"Mad Dog"

"Sargeant Darkness"

"Sister Golden Hair"

Thank you KofG.... Sgt Darkness.... Harbor doesn't rank high with me but again that album to me what another example of missed single choices... God of the Sun was a good song but She's Gone and Sgt Darkness along with Hurricane were the choices

Although I like "God Of The Sun" a lot, I agree with you, DB. I also think "She's Gone" would have been a better choice as a single. Interesting regarding the latter song that it's listed as "She's Gone" vs. "Now She's Gone" on the album label, sleeve or cover. Can't remember which way without looking. Personally, among the three singles released from "Harbor," ("God Of The Sun," "Don't Cry Baby" and "Slow Down") I never heard any of them on the radio.

Yep... Now She's Gone is right.... I agree with the airplay except i did hear God of the Sun twice... Once on a station that played a song and people called in ... it was called hit or no hit... i think the vote was a close negative - then on the station the next day i requested it and the DJ said he'll play it but it wasn't chosen for the stations airplay list the following week

Of the singles that charted I never heard was California Dreamin on the radio... then years later i did and then on XM radio the bridge where they play 70s and 80s I hear it and today's the day too infrequently....

Back during that time I did hear America's cover of "California Dreamin'" a number of times on the radio. When THE MOVIE came out, I was attending college in Albuquerque. Can remember intentionally skipping a Business Communications class just to attend a matinee of the showing. To this day, I still like D&G's version of the song. I think they did a wonderful job in covering it.

I'm saying K - you made the right choice... Glynnis O'Connor and all.. If that movie was any good - see Gerry Joke about being a blockbuster... one week out and straight to blockbuster... but if it was a good movie that song would have gone a lot farther then 56...yes... i like the Beach Boys version too

Dave - I never knew that the Beach Boys Did A Cover Of "California Dreamin'". Interesting who they got to appear in their video!

Interesting (or odd, depending how one looks at it, I suppose) that D&G sing it on the soundtrack as:

"You know, I got down on my knees (got down on my knees)
And I began to pray (I began to pray)"

However, in concerts these days when they do sing the song, it's "...I pretend to pray". I did notice that when they performed it during their Central Park Concert, it was sung as "began" which I like better, personally.
