Sat 7 Dec 2019 Adelaide Entertainment Centre Theatre
Posted on: 12/07/2019 11:18 AM

It was a 10 hour drive to Adelaide from Melbourne. I couldn’t help but see a similarity between the Victorian landscape and the golden hills of California.

Adelaide is a beautiful city organised on a grid and surrounded by parkland, as well a having parks and gardens dotted around the city centre. There are gorgeous old stone buildings, it is the home of Coopers beer and there a wine regions in areas close to the city. Adelaide is known as “ the city of churches”.

The venue looked rather new and was comprised of an arena from which a huge crowd of kids and their parents were leaving a performance of The Little Mermaid while an orchestra was playing live. Meanwhile the crowd for America’s show was arriving at the theatre in the complex.

Early in the show someone called out Happy Birthday to Rich. Gerry confirmed this and said it was Rich’s 61st. We hope you had a good day, Rich. It has been hard for us to see him, as our seats have mostly been on the other side. ( We don’t get to pick them.)

This was a really fun show. The songs were the same as the previous shows, the music was good, there was a lot of interaction on the stage. Gerry made special reference to how good the promoter’s crew had been on the tour.

Gerry said it was the penultimate show of the tour. I have frequently used the term myself when describing such a night. It has the same feel as hearing Sandman and realising that the show is almost over.

We shared our row with friends who we first met at the 1999 New Year’s Eve concert. We also saw them at the Gold Coast show. They kindly offered to drive us back to our Adelaide hotel.

Earlier in the day we had lunch at a pub in Rundle Mall. Afterwards I noticed an interesting independent shop and went in. The salesman was warm and engaging and he asked where we were from, what we were doing in Adelaide (America show) etc then he said someone from (or maybe associated with) America had been in the previous day. We have no idea who it was but this made us curious. Who was it?

After the show our friends suggested we have a drink at a pub near the venue. Ross said for me to turn around as we were about to enter the pub. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Sitting there beside where I was standing was the previously mentioned salesman. He wanted to know all about the show. What are the chances?

The shows are always so good but sometimes quirky things happen that add another layer to our experiences.

A doctor on the Gold Coast asked me what we were doing there. When I told her we were there to see America, she said that her Filipino father had been a fan and she had absorbed their music.

Another night, Ross was talking to the couple beside him and they told him they had dined, by chance, at a table next to the Beckleys in Italy last year.

It’s a small world.

Sleep calls. Thanks for another wonderful night! Also a shout out to the very friendly people of Adelaide.

Great review Margaret yet again!

It seems like every concert you do well to find that little bit extra. Catch up on your sleep - I do admire your stamina.

Cheers Ainsley
