OT: Political Poachers
Posted on: 10/13/2019 09:41 PM

At the risk of being a political poacher, does anyone want to bet one of their America memorabilia items regarding the following:

I'll bet one of my America items (let's say for example my brass America belt buckle or maybe one of my America t-shirts that I've collected over the years) that Trump will not be impeached.

And, on a different bet (again for another America item), I bet Trump will be victorious in 2020 over whichever Democratic candidate that he will go up against whether it be Elizabeth Warren, Joe Biden or Hillary. Any takers on this friendly wager?

PS: I'm not advocating one party's candidate over the other. Just saying I believe Trump won't be impeached and that he will be victorious in the 2020 election. For what it's worth, two of my three siblings are Democratic supporters for 2020 while one is a Republican supporter.

King of Glass - The conversation on this page, when it actually happens (which is rare), is always much friendlier (& more respectful) when politics are left out of it. For what impact or result are you initiating this thread?
And someone told me too that it's true when you call aloud - It's only destiny or is it mystery (?)

I am not a gambling man, so I am NOT taking you up on your bet, but I think he might be impeached, but will not be convicted or removed. Impeaching is just bring the case to the Senate for a trial. Then the Senate hears the case and votes to convict. 2/3's vote is required to convict. That is what happened to Bill Clinton.

As far as the 2020 election goes, I think it will depend on how the economy is doing a year from now. If the economy is still doing well, I think he has a shot at re-election, if we are in a recession, he will be in trouble.

In reference to the title song, Political Poachers was not one of my favorite songs from Harbor. In fact I thought it was a weak album for Dewey. He only contributed 3 songs and I really did not care for 2 of them (Political Poachers and Are You There).

Thanks for the postings, Mark and Dave. I wasn't very fond of "Harbor" as a whole in the beginning, but it has really grown on me over all these many years. I really like the alliteration that Dewey used on "Political Poachers". Dan's guitar solo on "Are You There" really made the song in my opinion. Without it I think the song would have been a real dud.

Mark, I appreciate what all you said regarding your political opinion. I think we are all mature enough to have a civil discussion about such things. You and I will have a "pretend bet" then. Thanks for explaining about the impeachment process. I still believe Trump will not be impeached based on your explanation. I firmly and wholeheartedly believe he will win 2020 (and in a major landslide).

I'd like to point out to the readers here that neither Mark nor I are stating that we think one particular candidate is more worthy to win than the other. We both merely stated how we think the impeachment talk will turn out and whether we believe Trump will be successful in winning a second term.

Interestingly, there's a book written in 2016 entitled "Poaching Politics".

A very interesting & diverse set of emerging opinions here on Harbor . . . "Are You There" happens to be one of my all-time fave Dewey Bunnell songs. Political Poachers I also like, especially for its electric sitar.

I am not going to wade into any political debate here, as it is likely to evoke unintended negative feelings (having seen it happen here before.)

I have always liked most of Harbor. Don’t Cry Baby, Political Poachers, Sarah, Are You There, Monster and Sargeant Darkness ( which I always loved and thought it was Gerry’s answer to some of Dewey’s visual lyric tunes) I believe rank up there with some of the best!DanC

I fully agree, DannyC - Sargeant Darkness is a wonderful song, indeed one of my favorite Gerry Beckley tunes. The whole Harbor album flows masterfully, very smoothly interweaving even what I consider to be (in my humble opinion) the weaker tracks, Hurricane & Down to the Water . . .

I agree KofG.... Harbor is above Perspective but i am not sure if it beats any others........ I too agree with SGT D - it's great... i happen to like the live version in 1977 of SGT and Amber a ton...But all in all I'll grab first - the first two albums, Alibi, Holiday or Here and Now... then 2nd level VFTG, Hourglass and Hideaway... Still America is America music so i don't dislike any album

Danny boy - I didn't say anything different in my second posting that I made in comparison to the first one.

WHAT I SAID IN THE FIRST PART OF MY SECOND MESSAGE:

"I'd like to point out to the readers here that neither Mark nor I are stating that we think one particular candidate is more worthy to win than the other."

vs.

WHAT I SAID IN THE FIRST PART OF MY FIRST MESSAGE:

"PS: I'm not advocating one party's candidate over the other."

WHAT I STATED IN THE SECOND PART OF MY SECOND MESSAGE:

"We both merely stated how we think the impeachment talk will turn out and whether we believe Trump will be successful in winning a second term."

vs.

WHAT I STATED IN THE SECOND PART OF MY FIRST MESSAGE:

Danny - For many years you have picked on me ruthlessly along with three others from the past. I have and will not be fooled by you. Such as your, "The monster exposed himself..." comment. If, however, you would like to start anew, I am more than willing to extend the olive branch to you. You and I used to be friends here. I am willing; I leave it up to you.

Wow, really, Dan? Since you didn't mention it here on the blog why I called, it leaves everyone reading this not knowing why.

Being that Dan wasn't able to accept my call, I spoke very briefly with the person who answered. I assume it was Dan's wife. I told her I was hoping to speak to Dan to ask him to come back because I know he enjoys America's music and talking about it as much as I do. I also wanted to tell him that he and I should let the dislike for one another be a thing of the past and that we should forgive and forget and start anew.

Dan, I cared enough to call you by phone in hopes that we could make amends, but you can rest assured that I will never attempt again to reconcile our differences if that is the way you want it. However, I am not sorry that I called. I tried. Life's too short to harbor such bitterness and animosity.

Have you ever met a current or past president of any country? I never had. Well, until very recently.

Last week a husband and wife came to my workplace. Before they left, I was chatting with them about where they were from. The husband said he was originally from South America. I asked the third person who was with them how they were related. The couple replied he was their friend. The husband showed me a book that he was reading and said the book is about the couple's friend. He further stated that their friend is the former president of Ecuador! I was very surprised to say the least. I asked the former president to write out his name so I could read up about him when I got home. I also asked him for his autograph. So, on a small yellow Post-It note he wrote: "To Johnny, Osvaldo Hurtado".

Upon arriving home, I researched his name and found out that he was the 34rd President of Ecuador having served from 1981 to 1984. I also found on the internet his autograph. Very similar to mine, the former president signed an autograph: "To Michael, Osvaldo Hurtado". His signature is so unique and comparing the one he gave to me to the autograph found on the internet, it was definite proof that he was indeed the Former President of Ecuador.

Neat! Never met a governor but I do remember receiving a handwritten postcard of congratulations from my state's governor when I graduated high school. I thought that was really cool. Found out, however, when I told some of my classmates about the postcard that they also had received one. Still thought it was nice that he would hand sign about 450 postcards if he sent one to every graduating senior in my high school. I suppose every 12th grader throughout the state also received an autographed postcard with a handwritten message. I still have it to this day even though as it turned out that I joined the opposing political party than the one the governor represented.

I can remember as a young elementary student my mom saying to me, "It's not like you're meeting the governor," when I was concerned/worried about having to meet someone "important". Can also remember thinking, "What's a governor?"

Just for the record:

Even after watching a number of impeachment hearing videos from last week, I still don't think the House of Representatives will impeach President Trump. With that said, if anyone would have truly bet me (their America memorabilia item vs. my America brass buckle), I actually wouldn't have taken their item from them if I were to win. However, I would have honored my bet if I were to have lost. Just wanted to mention that.

King_of_Glass - Just to clarify: Are you mentioning this to show us what a nice person you are? Or, do you have another target impact in mind?

I genuinely admire your dedication to All things America on this board. On the other hand, I doubt you will get much response on your politically-themed bets / references, as these tend to cut very deep. In other words, they trigger uncomfortable / negative feelings for some of us. Especially now.

Have always lived in the same town where I was born which is in Southeast New Mexico. Well, most of me; part of me was born in Texas. Like the small town life which is the population of only about 38,000. My siblings and I were all raised in this New Mexico town; however, I was the only one born where we all grew up. They all live in larger cities: Albuquerque, Dallas and NYC. Attended college in the same state. Have a bachelor degree in Business Administration. Also attended X-ray Technology school, therefore, have worked as a registered x-ray tech for a number of years. Spent the first 18 years of my employment with Texaco Exploration as an accounting employee. Looking forward to retirement in about 1.5 years! Although being Asian, I have never been to the Orient but have been to a number of countries in Europe as odd as that is. The hospital where I was born is now a senior citizen home. Sure hope I don't have to return there and be told, "This is the room where you were born. Welcome back. Hope you enjoy your old room/new home!" "Hey, nurse, I remember I x-rayed you when you were born." "Pipe down, eat your oatmeal."
