Wednesday 26 July 2017 Hamer Hall Melbourne
Posted on: 07/26/2017 10:51 AM

It was 41 years ago this month that we saw America on their first Australian Tour. It was with the same sense of eager anticipation that we approached this show on a wintery Melbourne night.

Legendary Australian musician, Russell Morris, was the support act. His set incorporated some of his recent and very successful blues songs and hits from past decades. The audience responded enthusiastically, as they later did for America. He spoke sincerely about America's professionalism and warmth of character.

There have been some changes since the 2015 Australian tour. This was our first time seeing Andy and he was terrific. Great work on the banjo, Andy! We wish Bill well with his new endeavours. There were several changes in the setlist. There were some new videos and subtle changes in some of the old ones, with Australian references in Sandman.

It was a full house tonight and a fabulous achievement after the 41 year association with Australia. It was diffcult to try to spot other fans we thought might have been at the show, although one fan was met in an unexpected place.

The night was full of surprises and we take away fond memories of the night. We love seeing this band! Thanks for a great night.

Here is what we heard.

Hi Margaret

Totally agree with you ,aren't they such a professional act. Their enthusiasm never stops and the band just gets better and better with new additions.
I also still have my ticket stub from July 16 1976 at Melbourne festival hall what longevity they have had.
Glad to have bumped into you at the "ladies toilets" of all places, it is funny where you meet people!!! And glad to see you got recognised by the boys at the end, did you manage to catch up with them post concert because I didn't - I wish we had meet and greet here in Australia.
I did meet Ryland Steen though and am loving his cd that I bought definitely now a fan!

Hopefully there may still be more tours especially now Gerry is part Aussie and we may meet again.

Hi Ainsley,

It was good to meet you. Glad you enjoyed the show as much as we did.

We played Ryland's CD on the drive home. He is a very talented musician.

It was a great night. Here's to more of them.
