"Kiss Me On The Waves" And Others.
Posted on: 07/04/2014 01:57 PM

Dan Peek - His Solo Years which also mentions his lead vocals on Etcetera's
"Kiss Me On The Waves", featured on their 2011 album - "Steps On The Water".

Listening to the album during my early morning walk today, I wondered if the songs had been downloaded onto youtube. I checked and found that the tracks had just been recently posted.

Great song.

Dan certainly left his footprints on this earth. Sadly missed.

On the America blog there is discussion about a possible follow-up to "Back Pages". I thought what an amazing tribute it would be if G&D covered one of Dan's solo songs.

I actually mentioned "Coconut Tree" to Dan on his blog, saying that I thought it would have been an excellent America song with D&G, backing vocals. Dan said that he was very proud of the song and, yes, he agreed with me. He was just a very "giving" musician.

G'Days to Catherine, Tom and David Peek. Also to a friend of the Peek family and fellow fan, Steve Orchard.

I'll leave with Dan's "Velvet Elvis" flowing through my headphones. Always brings a :) when I hear it.

Happy Fourth of July Bluey! I know. It's only for us Americans!!! Anyhow, I'm not ignoring you. But I need time and mental wherewithal to go through your posts here. Tomorrow is another day.

I just finished reading Dan's book for probably the 6th time. I don't want to gloat, but our evenings this week have just been lovely. I've really enjoyed sitting outside, reading. One night I finally came in at 9:30! This afternoon I finished the book. So now I have to choose another one. Life is hard.

We celebrate Australia Day on 26 January. The winter weather on the mid north coast of New South Wales where we live has been beautiful, people still walking around in shorts and T-shirts. Today we walked down to the beach and watched a large pod of dolphins playing and riding a few waves. We also saw some whales migrating north.

I mentioned a possible "Back Pages 2". I wished they could also include of couple of their own songs that haven't been released on mainstream albums.

When I first met my wife of 30 years, she had a couple of America's first albums, "Homecoming" being her favorite. Over the years we have gone to about 7-8 Aussie concerts. Unfortunately the buck stops for her at going to Whitesnake concerts, and of course I complain that she should go since I have to accompany her to Andre Rieu's concerts :)

She absolutely loves "Paradise" and "Dream Come True"...

Hello Bluey! We had really nice weather most of our "winter," also, but we're sure paying for it now. My thermometer hit 107 yesterday. I hope you receive the precipitation you need, in order to minimize summer forest fires. I swam yesterday for the first time. The lake is already down 3-5 feet, which it shouldn't be until next month. Still very nice swimming, because of the extreme heat. We have a great view of Mt. Shasta from the lake, and it really shows how pathetic the snow pack is. Very frightening, and it's only early July.

A Swiss friend gave me a CD of Andre Rieu. He's good. But if I'm going to listen to classical, it had better be a whole orchestra, or I'd better be there to see, as well as hear. I got rid of the CD because I can't keep everything!I also really like "Paradise" and "Dream Come True." Dewey's vocals are very different, but very effective on both songs.

Married 30 years!!! Good for you! Go for another 30!!!Today I was reminded why "two are better than one," as I tried to assemble my makeshift "greenhouse" out of PVC pipe, and the danged thing kept falling apart. It's a 2 person job and there's only one of me. I grumbled to God and fetched the hammer. When all else fails, whack it with a hammer. It's together, standing and doing its job!

Yes, but Bluey, I thought you said you worked for years in the newspaper business! You have me confused.

I make friends with every law enforcement officer I can. Not quite sure what they think of me. But, in a small town, people have their jobs and then they have all their volunteer activities. So I know officers at all 3 pertaining levels of service, and it's served me well when there are problems.

shasta Yes, but Bluey, I thought you said you worked for years in the newspaper business! You have me confused.

After graduating from high school my first job was a copy boy with Sydney's Daily Mirror. In those days journalism wasn't a university course. To start a career in journalism, you had to have the required education status and begin your journey as a "copy boy".

At that time Sydney boasted about three high level newspaper companies. Rupert Murdoch owned the Mirror. They all had similar structures by way of awarding two cadetships per year to successful applicants (copy boys) who were evaluated on their performance and passing relevant in-house examinations on a wide range of varied topics. I was with the Mirror for 2 years but ironically I was offered a cadetship with a Sydney rival newspaper. It was a wonderful opportunity but my life lead me down another path. "It's Life".

I told Dan that my wife's favorite of his solos was "Thank You Lord". "Brotherly Love" was also a favorite. He liked that.

Bye for now.

Bluey.

O.K. Bluey. I think I'm straightened out now. Thanks. An interesting switch from journalism to police work. It would do the younger generation a lot of good to get their education AND then start at the bottom of their chosen profession, working their way up. I talk to so many people who think they "deserve," and the list of what they deserve goes on and on, based on their education or whatever. Dan said something very wise in his book about being grateful for the bottom level of jobs he'd had in his youth, because it gave him an appreciation for the people who are doing those jobs currently. I like that attitude!

Are you retired, or still working? One of the law enforcement officers I know is retired from the Highway Patrol and military reserves. He doesn't take his salary from his current law enforcement position, because his retirement is sufficient for his needs. He's a good person and I have a lot of respect for his diligence on the job.

I still haven't listened to all your musical offerings here. (Oh man, that frown is killing me) teehee. I'll get 'round to it. Be patient, please.

Ellen, I'm supposed to have 2328 posts so I guess I must be retired to have all that
time on my hands :)

I've been retired for awhile now. I don't want to sound corny but over the years I've felt God's breath a number of times and now greet every day as a bonus. I have a great family, good friends and a comfortable life style. I'm very content. The only downside is that I just wish my 6 yr old male Jack Russell had less energy. He knows the word "walk" in 40 different languages :)

Take care.

Morning, Bluey. The loverly person behind me decided 7:30 was an excellent time to move one of their broken-down trucks that's come for repairs, about 20 feet from my bedroom window. Now, it's o.k. because I had to get up for work. But what isn't o.k. is that I was in a very sound sleep, dreaming I was wandering around a certain village in Switzerland, trying to find a parking space for the American car I'd taken over with me. So if I sound like an idiot this morning?

Retirement. It's a good thing you HAVE that Jack Russell. He keeps you young, I'm sure. My German Shepherd didn't have as big of a vocabulary as I thought he did. He keyed in on tone of voice, mainly. Being German, he was VERY time-oriented and he would REMIND me of things I needed to do. However, he knew the expression, "Would you like..." You could say anything after those 3 words and he'd go ape.

A great advantage of retirement, or seemingly forever crammed into the part-time workforce where I've found myself for years, is that you have time to think. I figure God has given me this time for a reason. So I'd better use it - wisely? Dunno sometimes. But you're not the least bit corny when you say you sense His breath on you. He's alive and well and very much cares about His children down here on planet earth. Lots of unpleasant things happen. The world is going to hell. We need to be about the business of making a difference while we have the gift of time. And when that time element has disappeared, we need to have lived our lives so that we don't fry for eternity, eh? The secret is in KNOWING Him, not in doing things. I'm in a position right now where I NEED to feel His touch. I NEED to hear His voice about situations. It takes time and determination to stop the busyness so we can hear and feel. Gotta stop the merry-go-round.

As for the number of posts? I just noticed with shock that I'm over 1,000. Shall we have a contest? Naw. I ain't much into contests with others. Anybody who wants to compete against me had better go find a wall to compete with. You'll get more of a reaction.

Well, Bluey. I finally listened to all these clips you posted. And on a Sunday too! You know, listening to the music is one thing that takes time. But I'm never content with that. I have to know who wrote the song. I'm sure I discovered these things a year ago. But it was good to refresh my memory.

Musically, all these songs are nice. Easy-listening, for sure. I'm kinda surprised, because I thought Dan had a hard-rock edge to many of his songs while he was with America. The island effect??? "Kiss Me on the Waters" definitely sounds like "Hurricane." I love the imagery SteveL put into the lyrics on "Bridal Veil Falls." Of course I checked out pictures and I particularly like the ones of the mountain climber trying to scale the ice in winter!

My favorite is "Coconut Tree." It's in a minor key. I love the ukelele. The arrangement has surprises in it, if you compare it with the simple introduction. The end of the song explains what the reference is about. Psalm 92 speaks about the palm tree. The contrast between that and the drug-filled life is a jolt.

Dan wrote the lyrics to "Thank You Lord." I like them. His solo is much better than on the other videos you uploaded, Bluey. The 2nd verse on "Brotherly Love" is particularly strong. Since the song was a collaboration between 3 people (Dan included) I wonder who wrote that 2nd verse.

Over the years I have seen America's music classified as "soft rock", "folk rock",
"Californian Sound" and sometimes just plain "70s Rock". I can't recall any of their music that would be cloned as "Christian" or "Gospel".

There was a thread here about "America's Best Rockers".
I thought Dan's "Everyone One I Meet Is From California" [Live off Musikladen) was their best but several fans picked others by D&G as well.

I was kindly given a 2-disc "Dan Peek: Unplugged", taken from a couple of his live solo shows. He really liked to spice up his songs and some of D&Gs. "One Way (To Heaven)" seemed to be a favorite concert opener.

Remembering Dan Peek: "Divine Lady", "Love Was Just Another Word", "He's All That's Right" and "One Way (To Heaven)"

Good Evening Bluey! My thermometer hit 104 today. Nasty, heavy air that smacks you in the face when you go out in it.

You confused me with your remark (and I forget how to encircle a quote here), "I can't recall any of their music that could be cloned as 'Christian' or 'Gospel'."

Ellen, just wondering if any America songs, particularly during Dan's tenure (1972-1977), that could be classified as having christian overtures. It was just an afterthought about classifying America's music.

Sad to hear about Willie's departure. From memory he was also a very accomplished pianist as well. Age shall not weary them.

Dan's wonderful "Christian" adaption of "Lonely People"

Mornin' Bluey. I will get back to you on this. Really heavy-duty work week, as I've accepted extra work. It's hotter than blazes here, and the place I'm doing today has no AC. The earlier I start, the earlier I can get out of the heat.

Hi Bluey! I'll get a start on this, as it's gonna take some time, and time is one thing I don't have an abundance of this week. I'm going to ignore Dan's songs, because he said outright that he often put in lyrics that pointed to Christianity. Another time, if you want my opinion on his songs, I'll give it. And if Gerry or Dewey didn't at least have a hand in writing the song, I'm going to ignore it. In the interest of time, I'm going alphabetically. I'm ignoring Gerry's solo efforts also.

1. All Night, written by Dewey, 1979. The line "love thy neighbor." I don't think it was his intention to preach here. There's a tug-of-war going on between this line and the rest of the song.
2. Amber Cascades, written by Dewey, 1976. The line "then we call to the man who walks on the water."
3. Call of the Wild, written by Gerry, 1994. The line "come save me," is interesting. I don't think he intended any Christian connotation. Also, "an image of angels..." again I don't think he intended any Christian connotation.
4. Close to the Wind, written by Gerry and Steve Levine, 1994. The line "I was walking on the water." Unintended religious connotation, but appropriate to describe a feeling. "Peace will reign on earth," Christmas!!! "I pray every single morning." Good!
5. Cornwall Blank, written by Dewey, 1972. "I've been down to the water," is an expression for baptism. "I've been on top of the world," could correlate with one of the 3 ways satan tempted Jesus, or the Mount of Transfiguration. I think these references were unintentional on Dewey's part.

Interesting, these lyrics, and how much they're a part of our culture, or perhaps WERE a part of our culture, and you don't think about them until you make yourself think about them! I think about them, because I'm a Christian.

That's all for now. I went through the letter F. (That a reminder to myself!)

Thanks for your imput Ellen. Your energy, commitment and attention to detail is amazing. Unfortunately a thread topic sometimes just doesn't create interest or discussion amongst
fellow fans. I think this is one of them so I'll close this one off for now. Again, many thanks.
