What's My Line? Dan Peek
Posted on: 03/30/2014 12:46 PM

Well, I said I thought it would be cool to start this thread over here on Dan's blog. Nobody has taken me up on it. So I'll start the ball rolling my OWN self!

"The wind through the leaves plays a symphony
Harmony, rhapsody too."

I just LOVE that line from "Willow Tree Lullaby." The song goes on to say, "Don't bend with the wind." But the music gives the feeling of swaying in the wind. Interesting contrast.

O.K. Somebody else's turn!!!

shasta, you are very encouraging! "Lose yourself and then sometime"
"Maybe even save yourself some grieving".
Now it's back to cooking shasta.
Bye for now!

Good Morning Clarissa! Would you believe it's snowing here, and there's an actual winter storm WARNING in effect until about 5 tomorrow morning? Backwards. It's all backwards.

I don't understand how/where I was encouraging. What did I say? Maybe it's just because it's morning that I don't get it???

Is your house full? What's cooking in the kitchen? Maybe I'll drop in later? Don't I wish. A snap of the finger, and voila. Bon appetit.

The menu was cottage pie ie minced beef and veg with a brown mash potato crust served with veg; broccoli and carrots. Just an everyday standard. Sometimes we have homemade soups, lasagne and Maryland chicken, (my version coated with crumbly wheat cereal, Weetabix highly seasoned.

I believe you like snow shasta, if there is enough of it it is very pretty and fun to through snowballs etc.

Now your encouragement comes from my perceived enthusiasim you pass on through AAB.

Thank you, Clarissa! That's a nice compliment (about the encouragement).

We call cottage pie, "shepherd's pie" here! I first had it in Switzerland and loved it. I make it occasionally. The "Maryland Chicken" sounds good! When I was a little kid, we had a restaurant in the next town and they made the BEST fried chicken ever! I don't know what they breaded it in, but it was outstanding and I can't duplicate it! I think the restaurant used crumbled crown flakes! Doesn't fit my low-carb diet, however. Gotta slap my hand and stay away from such delicacies! I made a killer dessert last week: cheesecake with no crust! It was all sour cream, whipped cream and cream cheese with some sugar and Swiss vanilla! Wow!

Yes, I love the snow. But my body hurts all over tonight from pushing that wet, heavy stuff off the driveway and patio this morning! Will soak in a hot bath tonight!

While folding clothes, I was listening to America and "The Story of a Teenager" caught my attention, once again. I don't know who wrote the lyrics, Gerry or Dan.

"I was alone like the silence in the night
I had no home, no one close to hold me tight..."

"Everywhere I look I see your face
Every step I take seems out of place
You've got to be a man to run the race..."

Those are the lines that strike a chord in me. The last line especially makes me think. Life ain't easy and you've got to "buck up" as we would say in timber country, in order to make it through.

Hi shasta,

We call shepherds pie when lamb mince is used, a small variation.
Not sure about "The Story Of a Teenager", as regards the writer, also have not heard about it.

Sometimes I care about carbs and other times not, I can be very changeable in that department.

Enjoy your bath!

Our house is not full yet,but around Easter it will be.

Hi shasta, thankyou for loading "Story Of A Teenager", this one had escaped me. It's pleasant enough, the teenager bit no longer. Funny I still think of Gerry at least as a bit of a teen. Dewey is timeless, Dan was very thoughtful. I like all three of them.

I will enjoy my company thankyou.

Bye for now.

From "Saturn Nights"

"One more song about movin' along the highway"

Carole King fantasy in the air.

I'm priming the pump! I think the best song Dan ever wrote while with America was "Rainy Day." I love all the lyrics in the song. The verses are sensitive and vivid. The chorus, especially the words, "The piece of my life you take," really resonates with me. In college I had a poster hanging on my wall, with the words, "No man is an island unto himself; no one lives alone. All that we send into the lives of others, comes back into our own." I think of that poster when I listen to "Rainy Day."

One of my favourites is Hurricane. It’s funny, I actually never heard the song until years after it was released on the Harbor album. I knew Dan was into island living and his lyric... "In a hurricane, Oh, the hurricane, Some'll be taken, Some'll remain" really struck a chord with me (forgive the pun)! :-)

Hi Tom, aka Roady. Glad you joined the conversation. Hurricane isn't my favorite Dan song. Just re-listened to find out why. Despite the fact that people will give me dirty looks, I don't like a good deal of George Martin's orchestration. The song is a great 50's-60's rocker, has a great bass part, good rhythm, very strong background vocals. But I think I would've enjoyed hearing a good lead guitar part instead of the heavy emphasis on the horns. Without that lead guitar part, it just seems empty. I too like the lyrics, "Some will be taken, some will remain." Lyrically speaking, I think it's one of Dan's best contributions while in the band.
