He adds his own. It is usually subtle and in the background. On different songs he will add another layer of guitar or percussion/drums to try to give it a fuller sound. He may also add to the backing vocals or add handclaps, etc... It is almost like a slight remix, except he does not have the original studio recordings so he cannot manipulate what is already there. All he can do is try to add layers to it.

I suppose the question is - "Does it do the song justice?". I personally feel his enhancement doesn't distract from the original. Great to see someone taking an interest in the band's music.
Sometimes a remake or remix just doesn't add anything to the original. After looking at Gerry's VFTHWs of Redding,CA I personally believe one of the exceptions is a remix of Otis Redding's "Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay" by Will.i.am - which was made for a commercial.
