All Things Are Possible
Posted on: 07/21/2013 06:16 PM

Hello fellow Dan fans. Yesterday was a lazy Sunday, doing things around the house, so I put on Dan's "All Things Are Possible". There have been many, many threads posted about this amazing album. Here's another one.

On Dan's blog I asked him if he could, when convenient, tell us about the making of the album. He said that he would give it some thought after he finished telling us about his and Catherine's Caribbean adventures. Sadly that didn't happen. I believe that it wasn't a pleasurable time, production wise. Perhaps he just didn't want to go down that path again.

Here's my favorite track ~ "You're My Savior"

Just like America fans nominating their favorite album, some fans here have nominated other Dan albums as theirs. You get no argument from me.....it's just that this album is mine.
I suppose we are very fortunate in having such a great catalogue to choose from.

I remember when it first came out, I had a hard time finding it. I heard the song, All Things Are Possible, on the radio, but none of the record stores in town had the album in stock. Back in those days most record stores did not carry Christian albums. I finally found it in a Christian bookstore.

Form what Dan said about the album, it seemed that he did not enjoy working with Chris Christian, the producer of his first two albums. After splitting with America, I think somebody telling him what he should be recording or how he should be performing just rubbed him the wrong way.

Still, All Things is a very good album. The title song was a huge hit on the Christian and AC charts. The follow-up single, Ready for Love, was a big hit on the Canadian AC chart - not sure why it did not catch on in the US.

A solid debut for Dan as a solo artist, and it was nominated for a Grammy to boot.

Can remember Dan telling us how he had found tapes Chris Christian had recorded secretly during sessions with the two of them and how very angry Dan was when he found them. So much so that he erased them without C.C. knowing that they had been found. I wonder if the video recording of "Doer Of The Word" with GLB was recorded secretly as well. Anyone know?

ATAP got good reviews when it was released down here and freely available at all music outlets. Maybe a flow on after "Down To The Water" (off America's 1977 "Harbor") got good airplay. As you can see on the Aussie cover, there is extra wording, obviously to identify Dan as a founding member of America. Then and now, Aussies have always been solid America fans.

Unfortunately ATAP seems to be the only Dan release here. I was only made aware of his following works when I purchased a computer and joined up on SteveL's site.

I assume overseas ATAP releases had a double-sided inner sleeve containing lyrics and production notes. There is a photo of Catherine, Dan and (sister) Debbie at the top.
At the time I wondered who Debbie was as Dan's acknowledgements merely said:
"to Debbie for making it all run smoothly". Rich took and posted a wonderful photo of Debbie with D&G backstage after she attended their May 2012 Paducah concert. (See "Paducah Backstage Treat")

Johnny, interesting comments about those tapes. I certainly sensed tension between
Dan and Chris when I watched the "Doer Of The Word" video. Everything appears alright between Dan and Gerry. I wonder if this was around Gerry's "You Can Do Magic" era?

Bluey - I believe "Doer Of The Word" and "You Can Do Magic" were about two years apart with the latter being first if I'm not mistaken.

Regarding my own question about the video recording of Dan, Gerry and Chris Christian, I personally tend to think the recording was done without either Dan or Gerry knowing. I have the feeling it was posted on YouTube only after Dan had passed away for a reason, and that being, if it had been posted while Dan was living, perhaps things would have hit the fan between Dan and C.C. even more than things did during their recording sessions. Plus, all that Dan had told us about being secretly recorded by C.C. just seems to have been done with the same m.o. Just my personal opinion with no proof of anything either way, of course.

Concerning ATAP, I had to write to Lamb & Lion Records directly as no local music store was able to get me the album. I like the extra wording of the Aussie version of ATAP. Regarding the album sleeve with the photo of Catherine, Dan and Debbie, I initially thought Debbie was Catherine and Dan's daughter being that I could see a very strong resemblance between Dan and Debbie. It was only after Dan had told us via one of his bio episodes did I realize the two were actually siblings.

Hi Bluey. I occasionally pop in here to see what's happening. "Doer of the Word" was recorded in 1984 and "You Can Do Magic" in 1982. So "Doer of the Word" was post-Magic, if you will. Dan comments in his book that Gerry and Chris became friends and that Gerry recorded with Chris Christian again. I found those albums were recorded in 1987 and 1989.

In watching the "Doer of the Word" video, Dan greets Gerry with a wave and "Hey... Buddy," Gerry greets Chris and shakes his hand, Dan approaches Gerry with outstretched hand. Gerry ignores the hand and gives Dan a hug, pats him on the back. I surmise that Gerry was comfortable with both Chris and Dan.

That video was uploaded by "YMC Records," which I learned Chris Christian was CEO of for awhile. Apparently he no longer is, but they carry his recordings. Therefore, I assume it was Chris Christian who uploaded this video of them recording "Doer of the Word."

Johnny & Ellen, thanks for your imput. Without going into research, I remember Dan commenting about finally having total control over production of one of his albums. Irrespective of perceived fiction between he and Christian, the results speak for themselves. An amazing collaboration.

Hi Guys. I listened once more to Chris Christian's recordings that Gerry backed up. I'd be curious to know how Gerry feels about them. Seems to me that his input was minimal and far less than what he's used to with America - far less than with Dan's two songs CC produced, too. Dan said CC wanted to "do it all" and wanted Dan to record his songs, rather than Dan's own songs. Could indicate a controlling-type personality, which is basically what Dan said about Chris in his book. On the other hand, Dan said Gerry is a "musician's musician" with the hint that he'd record with anybody. In one of America's interviews Gerry said he'd "done a lot of session work" and "you only do the ones you really want to do." Given also the friction that developed between Gerry and Dan (as described by Dan) you can conclude that Gerry is more collaborative and Dan wanted to go it alone. I also am speculating by saying that Chris probably had heard all of Dan's side of his relationship with Gerry and perhaps Chris ran tapes secretly to compare the stories with experience - including recording with Gerry. I wonder if he taped the session where both Dewey and Gerry did back ups??? Maybe that's what Dan discovered and destroyed? My observation of "Doer of the Word" is that Chris takes a backseat and watches Gerry and Dan interact. He asks about their "thing" leaving messages on the phone and pretending to be different people. I gather there was a lot of communication between Dan and Gerry at that point (perhaps just concerning recording "Doer of the Word" and Dan never mentions that in his book.

In remembering that today is the anniversary of Dan's death, someday we will know the full story - and many more!

I was only thinking, legal issues aside, how amazing it would be for "Love Is Just Another Word" to be included in the next America album. It's the last song recorded with Dan, Dewey and Gerry. Written by Chris Christian and Steve Kipner (US#1 "Physical" and many more).

One of my favorite albums is Kipner's 1979 "Knock The Walls Down". Guests include Toto, David Foster, Robbie Robertson and others. Great album.

"Love Is It's Own Reward"

I just came across another Oz connection with Chris Christian. Darryl Cotton, founding member of 1965 Oz group Zoot, with members Beeb Birtles (LRB) and Rick Springfield, was later in the trio Cotton, Lloyd & Christian.

Unfortunately Darryl died of liver cancer 12 months ago.

Here is his 1978 solo hit -

"Don't Let It Get To You"

Bluey,

I was working at a station that was playing some pop music back around 1979. I remember playing "All Things Are Possible" from time to time, but we never had the album. Dan actually sent me the vinyl back in 1984 after I located his address from an appearance on the "700 Club." I still have the vinyl to this day, and its in great shape. As for reissuing "Love Is Just Another Word"...I don't see it ever happening. Fans that own the album or CD will have to be content knowing its the last song the guys all did together. Gerry's work on "Doer Of the Word" would certainly be the last time any of the guys sang with each other. As much as we all miss Dan, he still left a nice body of solo work to compliment the music he did with Gerry and Dewey. The resurrection of the 1972 Philadelphia show is just another example of that.

Hi Steve & Henk,

That vinyl would certainly be a keepsake Steve. I think you already know the story about Dan making up the CD and mailing it to me after I told him I couldn't buy it anywhere (Amazon, CDUniverse, Sanity etc). I even tried buying an IMPORT that was supposed to be "in stock" at Amazon for $US55, or something like that, but they kept sending me delay emails and it became apparent that they didn't have it.

Of course you're right about "Love Is Just Another Word". It's just a fan thing :)
That 1972 Philadelphia tape is a great find. The unreleased tracks were good, perhaps "Winter Of Our Love" being the standout. "Comin' Into Los Angeles" certainly has some interesting lyrics. Maybe they didn't want to release this one because their bags might be checked more often at airports :)

Henk someone posted that video on another thread. As always, thanks for your posts.

Thanks Henk. What a great video. I have been a Uriah Heep fan for years.
Uriah Duffy, former Whitesnake bassist, had a father who was a Uriah Heep fanatic.

I used to have a couple of Uriah Heep albums back in the 70's. I thought they were really good, kind of in the same genre as Deep Purple, heavy metal with an organ.

"Demons and Wizards" was probably their best album. "Magician's Birthday" was also very good. "Easy Livin" was there lone top 40 hit in the US, but a few other songs used to get airplay on FM rock stations like "Sweet Loraine", "Traveler in Time", and "Blind Eye". All good songs.

For some reason, they seem to have been largely forgotten in the US during the classic rock resurgence of the 80's and 90's. Classic rock stations rarely, if ever, play any Uriah Heep.

Thanks for jogging my memory!
