Great link! That is indeed a nice tribute.

Dan's song Rainy Day was a milestone in his song writing career. It gave him the confidence to write deeply personal songs which reached out to a broader audience. An audience that was soon to love America.

G'Day Tom.

I found youtube links for some tracks off "Light Of The World" (1989), apparently Dan's first collaboration with Ken Marvin & Brian Gentry [PEACE].

"Child Of Israel"
"Living Water"
"Blessed Are The Children", and

"Holy Redeemer"

Just wondering if the CD will ever become available for download?

**On behalf of all fans here, I hope all is well with you, Catherine and the Peek family?

Hello bluey,

It would be great if "Light of the World" could be re-released as a download. But, as applies to much of Dan's music it is not likely.

I would love to re-release "Light of the World" and Dan's other CCM albums but we do not have the rights to the music. You would think that if a person wrote and performed a song, it would belong to that person... but in the weird world of music publishing the rights to the music is often in the hands of faceless companies who are un-willing or un-interested.

To be fair though, the original publishing agreements provided the resources to record and publish the music. The whole subject is pretty murky.

What bothers me is when I see songs I wrote for Dan like "Lighthouse", "Magnolia" and "Power and Glory" get re-released on compilation albums without my say (or remuneration) when I own the copyrights.

Tom, I seem to recall Dan being asked on his blog about America compilations that included some of his songs. I'm sure the 2006 2 CD "The Definitive Pop Collection" was mentioned. Dan said that he was never consulted and didn't even know about most releases.
Sadly my immediate thought was....how did it get to this?

Around 1996, my wife and I went to see Ray Davies' (The Kinks) solo acoustic
"An Evening With Ray Davies - The Storyteller" at Sydney's Seymour Center.
An amazing evening. During his life recollections with the audience, he mentioned that even after 30 years or so, he was still involved in bitter legal pursuits for long overdue royalties for his Kinks' songs.

As always, thanks for taking the time to reply Tom.

"Lighthouse" - Dan Peek

I used to have the original pre-recorded cassette of "Light Of The World." All I have now are 4 songs from that as part of the Dan Peek "Unplugged" 2 CD collection I received years ago from an America fan. As far as reissues go, an old company named Thoughtscape sounds offered up "All Things Are Possible" and "Doer Of the Word" back in the 90's. They were pricey Japanese imports, but I went ahead and bought them complete with the original artwork and liner notes. I have never seen "Electrovoice" or "Crossover" on disc, but I have since transferred either my vinyl or cassette copies to disc. Dan left us with a great body of work and I'm grateful to be able to tap into that whenever I want.

Hi Bluey. I'm so exhausted, I almost signed in using your username! So please have a little pity on my laziness: I'm not going to go research these out. BUT I have to say, these last 4 songs of Dan's that you uploaded are very good. Granted, I've only listened to each one once and I'm real fuzzy-headed. But, musically-speaking and lyrically-speaking, they are very good. I can't catch all the lyrics, either because the enunciation wasn't clear in the first place, or because the recordings are well-used. Also, there's a LOT of treble in the instrumentation and perhaps scratchiness in the recording. I don't like a lot of treble. Also don't want to hear strings in folk music or rock music. Sorry George Martin. I want to hear the "pure" art forms without any "corruption" by classical instruments. I think producer Voyle Gilmore held a hard line with Capitol for the Kingston Trio and I really appreciate that. And yes, I like classical music. Just don't want 'em mixed! I'd like to hear somebody with America's tight-knit harmonies and a more balanced arrangement record these 4 songs. They're good songs. Love those minor chords. The lyrics seem to flow well with the music. There are key changes and bridges that build the songs and don't detract from the flow.

Am thinking of some of Dan's "interesting" harmonics in songs such as "Willow Tree Lullaby," and "It's Life." Those songs sound like he was experimenting with some of the different music he heard while living in Pakistan. Did he ever write Christian songs using some of those other scales and harmonics???

It is a shame that Dan's last two CCM albums (Electro Voice and Crossover) and his first collaboration with Marvin and Gentry (Light of the World) were never released on CD or digital format. Those albums contain some of his best work. I still think Electro Voice is his best solo album!

The only albums that were released were the ones produced by Chris Christian. Chris owned Home Sweet Home records who ended up with the rights to Dan's CCM catalog, so he released the albums he was involved with (All Things are Possible and Doer of the Word).

I remember corresponding with one of the executives at Home Sweet Home many years ago, when they released Doer of the Word on CD. At the time he said they were considering releasing Dan's other CCM albums, but then he left the company and obviously the albums were never released.

They keep re-releasing his material from the first two albums on various compilation for download on Amazon, you would think they would release his other material for download.

I guess I just don't understand the music business.

Mark,

Awhile ago Dan made a number of his albums available on-site as LP/CD combos.
I got "ATAP", "Doer" and "Electro Voice". I'm sure "Crossover" was included.

Maybe Tom Peek might still have those combos available?

www.danpeek.com

Tom has added a song that Dan was going to put on his next album - "Don't Cry, Goodbye"

Dan trails off the song, repeating the word "Goodbye".

Tom, as emotional as it must be for you, thank you for sharing this song with us.

Yep, you're right on with that info. I ended up buying the first two albums via a company called "Thoughtscape Sounds" which used to specialize in hard-to-find material. I would have gladly paid $30-$40 each to get "Electro-voice" and "Crossover." Alas, I'll have to settle for the copies I transferred to CD. As for a company to reissue those two albums...probably not gonna happen. Yes, there are diehards like us that would buy those CD's, but probably not enough interest with the masses to justify the costs in getting them out...
