Filling in gaps in concert schedules archive
Posted on: 08/25/2010 01:09 PM

It has occurred to me that there are some noticeable gaps in the America concert schedules portion of the archives at http://www.accessbackstage.com/america/archives.htm. This is not a criticism of those who have compiled the content, but rather an observation of the opportunity that we all may have to perhaps fill in some of those gaps. I have seen America live on four occasions (a piddling number I know). Two of those times were quite recently, and the other two were at earlier times in their career. Neither of those first two concerts that I attended are included in the current lists at the archive. One concert was during the mid-70’s and the other was during the mid-80’s. Utilizing what I know of the respective venues and approximate times, I have searched the web for the specific date or other details on either concert, without results. There simply is no online record of those concert dates. No doubt there are many others concerts where this is also true.

I’ve been thinking about how we as a community of fans can possibly work together to add more concert date info to the lists on the archive webpage. How might we help one another to recall or search for additional concert info? My suggestion is to do what I am doing. I went to the concerts lists, and concluded that the first two times that I saw America in a live performance are not currently recorded on the appropriate list. I can now enter a post in this thread that provides the information that I do know (location and venue, approximate year and/or month, other recollections of the show), and see if any others out there can help. To start it off, I will post what I recall about one or both of my two mystery concert dates as replies to this topic introduction.

America concert in Oxford, Ohio - Spring (April?) 1975

I am looking to establish the exact date for the following America concert:

Timing: Spring 1975, almost certainly in April, likely a Friday or Saturday
Location: Miami University, Oxford, Ohio
Venue: Millet Hall (basketball arena, etc.)
Sponsored by the Miami University Concert Board
“Sister Golden Hair” was the new single, "Hearts" the newly released album (from the program... 'their brand new album "Hearts"')
The opening act was a band called “Captain”.
I have a copy of the paper program from this event, but there is not a specific date for this concert on it. I tend to believe it was a Saturday in April. The America concert program does include a specific date for an upcoming concert scheduled for May 27, 1975 at Miami U. featuring Fleetwood Mac and the Climax Blues Band.

This is a good idea, Sergeant, and good for our 'noodles,' too. So many fans have kept treasures from the old concerts. Maybe some new collaboration will help fill in those gaps...

Hi Sergeant:

I've worked on this sporadically over the years.

If anyone can confirm a concert that's not in the archive, please send it to Steve Lowry and he can add it to the list.

Thanks.

If all you can come up with is the approximate date of the concert, send it to me and I'll add it to the list. Knowing that there was a concert at a certain venue at a certain time of year (e.g., Spring 1975) is better than no information at all. Plus, someone else who comes along and sees the list later, may have more specific information that they can provide.

Thanks,
SteveL

Thanks, Steve. By your criteria, the info in my previous post for the Oxford Ohio gig in 1975 should qualify it for the list. I think it was almost certainly a date in April.

I have another live performance to report on which is a bit more problematic. I will post that info in the next day or two.

America outdoor concert - Denver, Colorado - Labor Day Weekend 1984, 1985 or 1986

I'd like to confirm the year of this America live performance:

Timing : Labor Day weekend (first weekend in September), 1984, 1985, or 1986
Location: Denver, Colorado
Venue: Civic Center Park
Sponsored by “A Taste of Colorado – Festival of Mountain and Plain”
This was a free outdoor concert associated with this huge annual downtown festival

Comments: The Taste of Colorado festival, which continues in 2010 this coming weekend, began in 1984. That was also the first of five years that we lived in Denver spanning the Labor Day time period. I don't recall if we saw America perform on the large outdoor stage during that first year or one of the subsequent years. Thus, it could have been 1984, 1985, 1986 or possibly even later (although I strongly doubt it). I am thinking that we saw America perform the first year that we went to the event, but I don't recall if we went the first year that the event was held. I can find no online history of the event that extends back to the 80's nor do the online archives for the Denver newspapers extend that far back in time. My best bet may be to try to find some sort of Denver-centered pop-culture message board and ask the question "What year did the band America play at A Taste of Colorado?". Any other ideas, folks?

I have added the Oxford, OH gig to the list for April 1975. Since I don't always monitor this chat folder, feel free to send me (via e-mail at AmericaSL@hotmail.com) any other concert dates that are found and I'll see that they get added, too.

I tried to get the exact date for the Miami University concert by posting the question on the Miami University Alumni Association Facebook page. A respondent looked in the 1974-1975 yearbook and found a photo related to the concert but not a specific date. She also said there was nothing in another publication called "Miami Memos". Unless there is an archive kept by the Miami Concert Board (which sponsored the America show and still sponsors concerts on campus today), it may be really hard to pin down the exact date for this concert in the Spring of 1975.

America was at Miami University of Ohio's Millet Hall on Saturday April 26th 1975...and it was a phenomenal sold out concert... and a quick FYI. we also saw Fleetwood Mac and the Climax Blues band on May 27th 1975...it was also phenomenal, with the current players, however, there couldn't have been more than 1000 seats sold. That would change big time less than 2 months later when Their "Fleetwood Mac" LP would be released.

Thanks for sharing your experience Lapman. This concert has already been included in the list of 1970's concerts: www.accessbackstage.com/america/gigs7x.htm
