Rainy Day/Today's The Day/Beatles
Posted on: 08/28/2009 04:44 PM

G'Day everyone,

"Rainy Day" has been mentioned a couple of times on Dan's blog so I thought I would see if there were any youtube videos for the song. One has the original with just the Highway Box Set cover displayed and the other is a "cover" version by Andy Dengel.

America's first Aussie release was "Horse With No Name" EP.
I bought it for "Horse", but of course I had never heard the other three tracks. When I listened to "I Need You" and "Riverside"
I thought they were great tracks but after hearing "Rainy Day",
I went and bought the album.

What's your favourite Top 10 Dan Peek songs?

It can be a combination of America/solos or two lists if you prefer ~

"America Years" - "Solo/Peace Years"

Bluey.

Hey Bluey - My absolute favourite Dan Peek song is TODAY'S THE DAY. My second fav would have to be SATURN NIGHTS. More recently, I'm a big fan of CHELSEA'S SONG.

Hey Bluey - can you explain to me why the GUYS don't play TODAY'S THE DAY in concert when they do sing LONELY PEOPLE & DON'T CROSS THE RIVER? As far as I'm concerned it was one of the most memorable & adored songs of the 70s. Wasn't it number ONE on adult contemporary for a few weeks?? I'm certain you have all discussed this before, but as I'm still relatively new to the blog, my inquiring mind wants to know.

Hi Chaz & Johnny

JY, I'm playing "In The Country" as I type. Cow bells and even little Beatlesque background screams in there. Good rocker.

Chaz, actually in some concerts like Sydney's Opera House DVD, Dewey and Gerry play 4 of Dan's songs ~

"Don't Cross The River"
"Lonely People"
"Woman Tonight"
"Everyone I Meet Is From California"

There have been numerous posts and requests from fans on the different America blogs to include "Today's The Day" in their concerts.

Apart from being a great song, fans point out that it was the last genuine hit by America, as a trio, charting #23 on the Pop Charts and staying 2 weeks at #1 on the Adult Contemporary (AC) Charts. Concert audiences would be very familiar with the song.

Why other Dan's songs are performed and not this one, I honestly don't know or understand that Chaz. Although it's obviously a Dan song, I'm sure Gerry and Dewey would do it great justice.....and fans would love it.

Bluey ~ As you may remember, DanP said the cowbell used on "In The Country" is the same cowbell the Beatles used on "Yellow Submarine." Very cool bit of trivia Dan shared with us, I think.

Chaz ~ Concerning "Today's The Day," I posed the same question to Dan on his website blog. Dan kindly responded that he's at a loss himself as to why the duo doesn't play the song. In the 11 years that I have been present on either SteveL's website, the old VH message board or this one, the duo has never volunteered to provide us with an answer. One can't help but wonder if there's some type of personal matter that's at play.

I forgot about that Johnny. Here I am mentioning Beatlesque background screams on the song and then realizing that "Holiday" was the first America album produced by George Martin.

Reading Dan's story behind writing "Today's The Day" (found at the bottom of the lyrics page), maybe Gerry and Dewey consider the song just too personal and just don't relate to it. Akin to "Muskrat Love", one's about Dan's Sheepdog called Everett and the other is about...muskrats.

Typical with thread topics, you start out with one topic and it quickly diverts to something else :) So this thread's subject has had a minor adjustment.

Bluey & King_of_Glass - many thanks for your thoughts/info on the subject of TODAY'S THE DAY. Did I read somewhere that Gerry composed the piano music for the song? If so...he should be very proud of it as it's beautiful!!!!

Hmmm! Still such a mystery.

Sorry for digressing from your original thread, Bluey!!! I got a wee bit carried away.

Not a problem Chaz :) Talking about George Martin, I was surprised to read that his first international #1 was in Australia, 1961 - UK Charlie Drake's

"My Boomerang Won't Come Back"

His follow-up was Rolf Harris' hit - "Tie Me Kangagoo Down, Sport"

Rainy Day/Today's The Day/My Boomerang Won't Come Back

Now there's a thread topic for you :)

8. Never Found The Time
9. Hurricane
10. Glad To See You

Thanks Dave. I should make a list of Dan's America songs. And to think some regard Dan's imput towards America's success as minor. Few could dispute that 1971-1977 were their "golden years", their musical foundation stones, and thankfully Gerry and Dewey's musical genius built on that.

Hurricane to quote a couple of john lennonisms.....

Hurricane, here's a link to John Lennon quotes.

They are a real mixture about life's journeys, love, music and of course, The Beatles.

"I've made two 'discoveries' in my life: Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono. I think that's a pretty damned good choice"

"Before Elvis there was nothing"

During an interview about The White Album, a reporter asked him if Ringo was the best drummer in the world.

"In the world! He's not even the best drummer in The Beatles"

IMPO, he's definitely one person who would have seen life through kaleidoscope eyes.

"I'm just sitting here watching the wheels
go round and round
I really love to watch them roll
No longer riding on the merry-go-round
I just had to let it go"

("Watching The Wheels"
Double Fantasy)

Bluey and Chaz,
I was told that the reason the guys don't do "Todays the Day" is because they do enough slow songs as it is,and that particular track would slow down the show even more.I don't think it has anything to do with being a "Dan" song, though I don't like the reasoning. If that's the case, they should jettison one of the other slow songs. "Todays The Day",along with "Amber Cascades",are two legitimate charting songs from the trio days. Its a shame they can't be added into the rotation.

Hey SteveO - many thanks for your thoughts.

If it were the case that TODAY'S THE DAY would further slow down the concert pace, why do they sometimes play ELEANOR RIGBY and NOWHERE MAN??

I always feel cheated out of a great AMERICA song whenever they launch into a Beatles tune.

MAJOR GOOF - I have had some bad things happen these past few weeks and I sat out in the hot tub with a few beers last night - the beers didn't hang around long, but anyway - I had Hearts in the CD player and I remembered the Dan list and how the heck could I have left Tomorrow off. I liked his 2 and half minute gems.. Simple Life too for that matter - But I love Tomorrow.

Today's the Day is among the best of the original lineup's collection of songs...why would Beckley or Bunnell want to include it in their playlist other than for the simple fact that it would make for a better show?

I have been saying that forever - Did enjoy Rigby at the Red Bank concert with Fountains of Wayne but would love to hear Today's the Day or any other America song. Want to keep it rocking how about Dont Let It get you down or She's gone - There was no Survival that night either. I understand the acknowledgment of George M but I would rather hear one of their songs from that era. Maybe Sgt Darkness or She's a Liar or even another Dan song.

SteveO - Interesting comment about slowing down the show - I agree - I think the only two songs that are really played slow are Gerry's two biggies I need you and Daisy - Plus if there was another slow one to be played - Gerry's Right Before your eyes would be a good choice. It was almost top 40 and hung around awhile especially on the AC Charts

Excellent point, Chaz.

Below is the playlist as posted by a concert attendee of the Humphrey's show last month:

Riverside
Ventura Highway
Magic
Don't Cross The River
Old Man Took
Daisy Jane
Last Unicorn
Three Roses
I Need You
From A Moving Train
Cornwall Blank / Hollywood
Eleanor Rigby
Tin Man
Border
Woman Tonight
Only In Your Heart
California Dreamin'
Lonely People
Sandman
Sister
Dream Come True
Horse

Let's face it, boys...the reason/excuse for not playing "Today's The Day" in concert is lame. From the above list of songs, the guys played FIVE slow songs IN A ROW ("Old Man Took," "Daisy Jane," "Last Unicorn," "Three Roses," "I Need You") yet they can't substitute one of them with "Today's The Day"?

From time to time, they also play the following slow songs: "Till The Sun Comes Up Again," "To Each His Own" and "All My Life." The first two are flipside songs and "All My Life" didn't even chart yet "TTD" is not being played by the duo and it was a #23 charting song as Bluey pointed out.

"Only In Your Heart" is another relatively slow song. It went to #62 on the Pop chart. It's often on the rotation list of songs but #23 "Today's The Day" has been absent for decades.

The reason given to us for not playing the last charting song by the trio is weak, and I don't think there's anyone who doesn't sees it as being so. There must be more to it than what's being told.

One last thing...the playing of "The Last Unicorn" over "Today's The Day"? I'm not a mythological animal hater but come on!

Dewey's inner sleeve comment about "Today's The Day" on
"Encore: More Greatest Hits" ~

"This was Dan Peek's song of love and optimism which turned out to be the last Warner Bros. charted single"

Apart from "History", I suppose the most promoted "Best Of..." album Down Under was their 2001 release -
"The Definitive America" - which included "Today's The Day".

When you think about it, Gerry wrote "I Need You" when he was still in diapers, so maybe he could "can" singing that for awhile and breathe some fresh life into Dan's song :)

When I last interviewed Dan several years ago,I told him that many fans have asked for "Todays The Day" to be played by the guys in concert. His response was short, but to the point--"Give the people what they want" he said. That interview is up on Dan's website under "Interviews" for anybody that wants to read more. Frankly, its not necessary for me to hear "The Last Unicorn" or even "To Each His Own" or "Til The Sun Comes Up Again." Delete one of those and add "Todays The Day." For years the guys never even did "Lonely People"--in fact none of Dan's songs were performed for a time--but because so many people were requesting it,it was added to the set list and is once again a staple,as it should be.
As for the Beatle 'covers',thats just the bands way of honoring the Fab Four. But I also agree that hearing one of those songs just takes away from the bands own recorded works.

Steve, it's amazing the number of acts I have seen over the years that included a tribute Beatles song. Two that come to mind are Gerry And The Pacemakers' "Got To Get You Into My Life" and Birtles, Shorrock & Goble's (LRB) "Back In The USSR" near the end of their "Full Circle" concert. I felt a little cheated with that one considering they didn't sing hits like "Love Is A Bridge", "Down On The Border", "Emma", "Shut Down, Turn Off" or even "Long Jumping Jeweller".

The same could be said if I had attended one of Elvis' concerts, in respect to his song selections. He did a lot of "covers" instead of his own material.

I agree what you say about the Beatles tribute. Their last two tours Down Under, their Beatles' tribute was George Harrison's "I Need You". To be honest I thought 'What about "Rainbow Song", "Clarice", "Tall Treasures" or "I Do Believe In You"???' But then I thought, "at least I'm in the same concert hall with Dewey, Gerry and the band, performing live. I can live with that".

Bluey,
For the most part, its common knowledge that the guys have to do virtually all of the hits. Thats what keeps the fans coming. But the guys also know that they have to throw a bone to the diehards too. Why Beatle songs as opposed to some hidden gem from an old album? Only they could answer that, but I guess its simply a form of paying tribute to an act they have alot of respect for. We all have our "Wish lists" of songs we'd like to hear; chances are alot of them would need to be worked up first with the band as I'm sure they don't remember how to play every song from every album to this day. While "Rainy Day" is a classic album cut,its not one that I would ever expect to hear them do. If they won't add a charted song like "Todays The Day",chances are rare you'd ever hear any other Dan Peek songs.

oooo oooo ooo!(hand raised so high in the back of the class that it's beginning to hurt!)
I have a solution!
How about we get Dan back and not only will "Today's The Day"
be played..
but alot of the list for which Bluey's thread all began:)
Problem solved!...lol

I noticed one big thing missing here though.
Everyone missed Dan's "Electrovoice" album!
If you haven't heard this you are TRULY missing what I believe to be the closest thing he did in resemblence to his America days.
Very Catchy. The title track, The Rapture etc. Awesome stuff!
It reminded me of his "Hearts" and "Hideaway" material. Tomorrow/Today's The Day etc.

But bottomline..
You want these songs played?
There's only one real way
...and you already heard it from me;)

Steve,
I got all of the Peek stuff here. The first 4 solo albums he did were his best. "Electro-Voice" is my 3rd favorite. You can't find a proper reissue of that anywhere. A couple of years ago some of the tracks were being offered via Dan's site as digital downloads. Not sure if those are still available. Diehard Dan fans already have "Electro-
Voice",but to find the original vinyl or even pre-recorded tape you'd have to check out a site like www.gemm.com If you can't find it there, forget about it.

SteveO, I logged onto gemm.com and they had 4 "Electrovoice" LPs ($21 to $8) and one cassette ($7.99), so I ordered the cassette. I've got cassette players, but no turntable. I'm just
waiting for confirmation that the cassette is still available. Thanks.

Unfortunately for Aussie fans, the only Dan Peek album, to my knowledge, released down here was "All Things Are Possible".
I wasn't aware of Dan's other works until I got this computer some 6 years ago.

I recently emailed the front cover of "ATAP" to Dan and SteveL
as our release has this extra wording on the front -

Dan Peek
formerly of "America"
HIS FIRST
SOLO
ALBUM

Dan and SteveL told me that they had never seen the Aussie album cover before. Steve said he'll add it to his "Dan Peek albums" section as soon as he can.

Bluey,
Glad you checked out the website and got "Electro-voice" ordered.
I had a correspondance going with Dan back in '84 which accounted for him sending me the original vinyl for "All Things." From there,I kept an eye out for "Doer Of The Word",which led to my first interview,a radio one, after its release. I tended to pay alot of attention to the christian charts back in the day,and with the release of "Doer Of The Word",he got somewhat prolific and released an album a year at that point. We've since done several additional interviews and at least a couple of those are posted on his site. When you get "Electrovoice",I would recommend you listen to "A New Song" which also got some christian airplay after the remake of "Lonely People" ran its course.
You don't have to be a born again christian to enjoy Dan's first 4 solo albums. I think those albums contain many of the elements that made Dan's songs and America's songs so enjoyable to the masses. By the way--you should look for Dan's 4th album "Crossover" as well. The title track is a real keeper!

Thanks Steve, I downloaded "Crossover" off Dan's site last year.
I think Dan played all the instruments on this album.

Here's the tracklist:

1...Crossover
2...I Will Not Be Silent
3...His Own
4...My Jesus
5...Get Ready
6...Night
7...Press On

"Crossover" is my favourite track. The harmonies remind me very much of "Today's The Day".

"My Jesus" is a great rocker.

"Night" has a "Lindsey Buckingham/Fleetwood Mac" feel to it.

"Press On" is a very solid track.

IMPO, even though it contains only seven tracks, it's one of Dan's best albums.

"Today's The Day"
Posted on: 09/14/2009 10:22 PM

Today's the Day does seem to be slighted. Not only is it not performed, but a few years ago when America released the budget CD "A Horse With No Name And Other Hits" it was the only Top 40 hit from the WB years left off the CD.

Not only was it their last top 40 hit from the 70's, but it was their biggest Adult Contemporary hit staying at the top of that chart for 2 weeks.

Jim, if memory serves me correctly, the first time they played George Harrison's "I Need You" Down Under, it was just after George died. They said that this was their way of saying thanks and goodbye. Gerry told us that over different times, he and Dewey had meet all The Beatles and had even mentioned his own "I Need You" to George. I'm sure everyone there that night was saddened by his passing. It was a special tribute.

Two or three years later when they toured again, I just couldn't understand their reasoning for playing it again. Like most fans here, I just think there's too many great America songs that unfortunately don't make the playlist.

With all due respect, I respectfully disagree. I love Dewey & Gerry's vocals on the Beatles songs, and their interpretation in general of the Beatles tunes. I absolutely love the Beatles (and who doesn't?) and just my opinion here, but America's versions of "Eleanor Rigby", "I Need You", "Nowhere Man" are just fresher and more upbeat. Dewey & Gerry's vocals really "liven" up those tunes.

And looking back into the Archives section I believe Gerry & Dewey have included Beatles tunes in the set since at least around 2001 - starting with "Things We Said Today." Or it might even go back further.

And pretty much every band (indie, or otherwise) that I know almost always includes a cover of some other artist (Stones, Elvis, Willie Nelson, etc.) or a Beatles tune in their set. It's a great way of honoring a classic band. And a great way that the guys honor Sir George.

I saw a great heavy metal indie band named 'Damage' last year that did an amazing version of "Come Together." I'd love to hear Gerry & Dewey sing that one.

And besides,in general, there's not enough 60's music being played these days, or even Beatles tunes played.... so, it's GREAT to hear America sing a Beatles tune, and a 60's song. And a great way to bring these tunes back to life.

I bet a lot of fans who go their shows hardly ever hear any 60's tunes, or Beatles songs (I know I hardly ever hear them on radio in my area) so, by them singing 'Eleanor Rigby' is a great way for some folks (or kids?) to hear some Beatles and classic 60's tunes - that are rarely ever played anywhere.

And for the most part America does long sets, and just about every night, and longer one's than most bands -- and besides "California Dreamin" they don't do many covers, so, what's wrong with hearing a cover and a classic Beatles song??

I've been listening to a lot of the Beatles catalog recently (old albums & CD's) and also since the Box set was just released, and I also just heard "Nowhere Man", and "Eleanor Rigby a few days ago - and I agree too, sure nothing beats the originals that are classic.... but I gotta say I love America's versions better. Just another opinion.

Gerry & Dewey, don't change a thing. LOVE the Beatles tunes.

Point taken Jenn. We only see the band every 2 or 3 years.
Their last Oz tour was in 2007, promoting "Here And Now".
I can't remember them doing a Beatles song at their Sydney Opera House concert.

I suppose the issue here is ~ if you had to choose, what would you rather hear - "Rainbow Song" (or any other favorite America song) or a Beatles cover?

As you pointed out, apparently America does great covers of their songs. No one would disagree. I suppose when you think about it, it's only a 2 or 3 minute breakaway from "classic" America. Some die-hard fans just believe that they pay their money to hear America sing their own songs. One can't disagree with their opinion either.

The most important thing of all is that they are still touring. To be honest, as long as Australia hits their touring radar once in awhile, I don't really care what they sing :)

Personally,I could do without the Beatle remakes. I'd rather hear the guys do their own songs as opposed to a non-hit 'cover' version.
"Rainbow Song","Todays The Day","Amber Cascades"--If the guys want to expand and broaden their live show, those are just a few of the many choices they could add on a rotating basis.

Many fans will agree with you there. If they include a Beatles' song, great. For most fans, getting to see the band "in-concert" is the ultimate experience. Song selection is really incidental.

BLUEY,I ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH YOU.I HAVE SEEN THE BAND 28 TIMES AND HAVE NEVER SEEN A BAD SHOW. THE FIRST TIME I SAW THEM WAS IN 1973. THE BAND IS SO TIGHT. I JUST SAW THEM THREE WEEKS AGO AND THEY SOUNDED AMAZING. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THEY HAVE SO MANY GREAT SONGS,AND THEY HAVE CERTAIN SONGS THAT THEY HAVE TO DO. I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR SONGS LIKE HOPE,WEDNESDAY MORNING,HERE,GREEN MONKEY,AND EVEN GOD OF THE SUN.THEY HAVE DONE TODAYS THE DAY BEFORE. ABOUT SIX MONTHS AGO THEY EVEN DID SUBMARINE LADIES,WHICH WAS A TOTAL SHOCK. THEY USUALLY PLAY ABOUT 90 MINUTES,AND WITH THE MANDATORY SONGS,THEY DON'T HAVE MUCH TIME TO MIX IT UP. BUT,THE SHOWS ARE ALWAYS GREAT AND WE ARE FORTUNATE THAT THEY COME AROUND MY WAY AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR.

Again, welcome to the blog Steve. 28 times between 1973- 2009. You must have a few America stories to tell after all those concerts?

Unfortunately when the band toured here as a trio, I was living
"in the bush" and couldn't get to Sydney to see them. Over the past 25 years I have been to about 8 of their Sydney concerts.

Interesting comment about "Today's The Day". I just assumed that Dewey and Gerry never played that song after Dan left.

"Submarine Ladies" [live] is included in Gerry's recently released solo album - "Happy Hour"

Steve_Orchard Bluey and Chaz,
I was told that the reason the guys don't do "Todays the Day" is because they do enough slow songs as it is,and that particular track would slow down the show even more.I don't think it has anything to do with being a "Dan" song, though I don't like the reasoning. If that's the case, they should jettison one of the other slow songs. "Todays The Day",along with "Amber Cascades",are two legitimate charting songs from the trio days. Its a shame they can't be added into the rotation.

SteveO

Here's another extract from Dan's reply on his blog when I recently mentioned "Today's The Day" -

"Bluey,

As for "Today's The Day", it is a mystery to me why D&G omit it from their shows since they play other songs I wrote. Have they ever given a reason?"

Steve, I mentioned your post to Dan and he is very interested in reading it.

Not performing "Today's The Day" would be understandable if G&D didn't perform any of Dan's music.....but four of his songs appear on their Sydney DVD.

America fans are very lucky in that there are so many great songs to choose from.

Bluey,
In a day and age where bands solicit input from their fans about song requests for shows,it is indeed puzzling why a legitimate 'hit' song like "Todays The Day" has not been worked up for the current Live show. Even "Amber Cascades" would be a fine choice as that was the final charting single for the guys as a trio, and a Dewey Bennell-penned song to boot. But in one of my earliest interviews with Dewey--circa 1989 or so--he admitted that NONE of Dan's songs were performed for quite some time after Dan left. He blamed it on the fact that they didn't think they could do them as well. But some of those songs were constantly requested, most noteably "Lonely People." So ultimatly, the duo did get back to "working up" those songs and including them in their live show. Why they can't do the same with something like "Todays The Day" is surprising. In an interview with me several years ago even Dan said "Give the people what they want."
Message boards on fan sites are always ripe with people asking for requests; we know the band has taken the initiative in the past. I would be in favor of seeing them do it again.

Steve_O - it's interesting to read the reason Dewey gave you for not playing any of Dan's songs for a while after Dan left the band. Maybe the answer to the TODAY'S THE DAY enigma is just that. Perhaps the GUYS do not include it in the set because they truly feel they cannot do justice to it. D, D & G's voices are all so wonderful, but different.

That being said, I'm certain Dewey & Gerry would be happily overwhelmed by the screams of delight and roars of applause from their concert crowd when and if they ever break into that great old tune.

'I've got this feeling...
...that today's the day.'

There ain't nothing 'quick & dirty' about yer Rainy Day cover!!

Bravo! Hope Dan himself has seen it! You've truly done him proud!

How long have you been playing the guitar? I'm guessing since you were six - around the time Gerry was composing on the piano!

Thanks for sharing your work with us all.

Hey Anita. Welcome to "The Dark Side" :).

I appreciate you mentioning this thread on America's Fan Blog.

I'm certain that Gerry knows you well enough to give an honest answer to your "Today's The Day" question.
Whether "maybe there's more to it, maybe there isn't", to me it seems "case closed" on their part about ever including the song.

Irrespective, this amazing and beautifully crafted song remains very special to America's many, many fans.

Interesting that G&D performed TWO new Beatles' songs, back-to-back, at their recent Wildwood Springs concert -
"I'll Follow The Sun" and "You've Got To Hide Your Lover Away". If Gerry really reads the blogs, and especially this thread, then their Beatles' double-header might be his polite way of telling "anti-Beatles cover" lobbyists to stick their opinions up their arses :) Ooouch!!!!

I'm listening to "Wildwood Springs" CD as I type.
"Pages". Dewey just creams that song. My favorite track is
"Tin Man"....IMPO, it's his best live recording of that song.

I hope you like this youtube cover by joeyovation ~
"Today's The Day". Joey seems to carry charm and character. Nice version.

Question: - If you were given a choice, what two favorites, not featured on current playlists, would you like to hear at your next concert.

My requests :-

"Rainbow Song"

"Another Try"

Hey Bluey

Great question!

Everyone on this blog now knows that Chaz here is crazy for TODAY'S THE DAY (but since I'll probably never hear that one in concert...), as well as MUSKRAT LOVE & TILL THE SUN COMES UP AGAIN (but as these two have recently surfaced in concert) I'll say:

YOUNG MOON & FOOLIN'

or...

PARADISE & SARAH

or...

ARE YOU THERE & WHO LOVES YOU

or...

POLITICAL POACHERS & NO FORTUNE

Darn! I cannot...cannot narrow it down to ONLY TWO SONGS!

Also...before I pass away...I'd love to hear HORSE WITH NO NAME performed the way it was first recorded...with Gerry & Dewey sitting forefront on the stage on stools as they used to do back in the day. Now that would be something!

Chaz :)

A great compliment made to Dan by Dewey and Gerry. I would have loved to have seen that.

Looks like the boys are gearing up for a great 40th Anniversary tour next year.

Hey Steve, wishing you and yours a great 2010.

When we moved from Sydney, I just didn't have the space for my extensive LP, CD and DVD collections. As I don't have a turntable, my LPs, apart from America and Dan Peek's, went to friends. I had replaced 95% of the LPs with CDs anyway.

As you said, some LPs were never released on CD format.
A couple of my favorites that didn't make the grade were Exile's "Mixed Emotions" (great album) and Steve Kipner's "Knocking Down The Walls".

Unfortunately, at this stage, there's are no "Shows" listed for Oz for this year.

Bluey,I have many records left, although I also gave away a bunch of them. I still like to look at the album covers and all of the information that is on them. My favorites are the old Beatle albums and I still have a few by Nils Lofgren, who plays lead guitar in the E STREET BAND with Bruce Springsteen. Nils used to play in small clubs near my home and he is one of the best guitarists that I ever saw.His band was called Grin and they were fantastic.Nils also played with Neil Young, and was the musical director for Ringo Starr and the All Star Band.If you are interested there are many Nils Lofgren and Grin videos on You Tube. Check out White Lies or Moon Tears. Nils is very popular in the UK,but I don't know how popular he is in OZ.Check him out.

Thanks Steve, very interesting Nils Lofgren website.
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band have toured here a number of times to sell out concerts.

In 2003 Colin Hay of Oz's "Men At Work" toured with Ringo's
All Starr Band and a cover of "Who Can It Be Now" was included on their album/DVD.

I mentioned Steve Kipner. He co-wrote America's "Your Move"
as well as the last song recorded by Dan, Dewey and Gerry - "Love Was Just Another Word" - from Dan's first solo album
"All Things Are Possible".

Although I got the album title slightly wrong, here's a link to
Steve Kipner's "Knock The Walls Down" album, containing his hit down-under - "Love Is It's Own Reward".

Bluey, I had never heard of Steve Kipner. In doing a little research,it seems like he has had quite a great career. I just listened to a couple of songs by his early band Steve and the Board, and he sounds like a couple of the early San Francisco bands like The Seeds and The Electric Prunes. A couple of interesting songs like Margot and Google Eye Goo.Isn't You Tube amazing? As for Colin Hay: I have always enjoyed him.He plays around here quite often.I remember when he played with Ringo on two different tours, especially the tour that included Paul Carrack formerly of Squeeze and Mike and the Mechanics.

Hi, Bluey and friends on the "dark side" -- my first visit and I really enjoyed reading this thread. 'Today's the Day' is a favorite of mine, too, and, yes, I would love to hear Dewey and Gerry include it in a concert.

It has been about ten years since America toured near me, so when they finally make it here again I do NOT want to hear a Beatles cover. It's another thing if they do the 'Indian Summer' or 'Always Love' covers because these are not so well-known or so readily identified with the original bands.

I love the older hit material, but D & G still have the chops for songwriting. Personally, I think 'Ride On' and 'Chasing the Rainbow' invoke the America Sound we all love. Maybe this will be the year they write and record all new material. However, that being said, in my most humble opinion, a 40th year album/concert should include collaboration with Dan. It doesn't have to be permanent, but, for goodness sakes, let's be grown up, try a little forgiveness, and rediscover the tight vocal harmony of THREE voices. It's all about the music -- or should be... I would love to hear at the next concert: "Tonight...America! with special guest, Dan Peek!"

Cat Hi, Bluey and friends on the "dark side" -- my first visit and I really enjoyed reading this thread.

Welcome to the blog Cat. Love your humour and username.
I started singing Cat Stevens' "Peace Train" as soon as I saw your post.

Yes, the topic of a Dan reunion has had many lives on all the America blogs I have visited over the years.

Even Dan is amazed that after 33 years since his departure, his presence is still felt amongst his many, many fans. Of course, in essence, D & G fuel this debate by including a number of his songs at their concerts and on "live" DVD/CDs. "Lonely People", "Woman Tonight", "Everyone I Meet Is From California",
"Don't Cross The River" and even their recent concert inclusion of "Rainy Day".

I hope you enjoy your stay with us.

Stevenom....You mentioned Paul Carrack. I posted a youtube clip of Squeeze's "Cool For Cats" on another thread.
He also had a big hit down here with a cover of The Searchers'
"When You Walk In The Room", written by Jackie DeShannon.
It's available on "Essential Eighties" CD.

I'm not gonna jump back into the Dan Peek debate, but I thought it was very interesting on how Gerry raved about Dan's song "It's Life"(from "Hat Trick")when he was a guest DJ on XM radio's "The Loft" channel on November 24,2006. Gerry DJ'd for 3 hours, and the only America song he played was one that he considered one of his all-time favorite America tunes--Dan's "Its Life." I'd have to go back and listen to the disc to quote Gerry verbatim, but I remember thinking that despite all of the animosity from over the years,Gerry singled out that particular track as one of the trio's best.

Carrack does a great version of Whitesnake's classic -
"Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City"

Hey SteveO....this is "the dark side", so we can talk about anything "Dan Peek", albeit hypothetical or fact :)

Fact - when a Dan reunion topic was mentioned on
"the white side", it generally ended up being devoured by witches, voodoo, human sacrifice, lightning, thunder and ice.
Rich, aka "Gandalf The Wise", has given "Dan trolls" our very own blog so we don't go there anymore :-)

Here comes the hypothetical part -

If it ever did happen, the continuity of the band would remain intact. Gerry, Dan and Woodzie are multi-instrumentalists.
No one would have to step aside. What I wouldn't give to see
and hear Dan singing "It's Life", "Rainy Day", "Today's The Day"
as America again.

Oh I know that all discussion on Dan is fair game here, but thats a well worn out topic with me. Of course I would like to see a reunion but I remember being pleasantly surprised that Gerry chose Dan's "Its Life" as his favorite America song when he did that guest DJ role on XM satellite radio back in 2006. And Dan's legacy in the band will always be acknowledged as long as the guys continue performing his songs in concert. Certainly the live set would be beefed up more if Dan ever returned--without a doubt there are lots of good songs that could be resurrected, including the ones you named...

Hey Bluey, I love that song. The video of Paul is great. He is amazing.P.S.,you are correct. The band would pretty much stay the same, but the harmony would even be better.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

bluey "Rainbow Song" and "Another Try" didn't happen at their recent South Lake Tahoe concert but "Rainy Day" did!! Together with "Foolin'". "Sleeper Train" and "Here"

Thanks to Jen for her review posted on America Fan Blog

A great compliment made to Dan by Dewey and Gerry. I would have loved to have seen that.

Looks like the boys are gearing up for a great 40th Anniversary tour next year.

Bluey.

Karen reports on the America Fan Blog a similar set list at the Jan. 30th Dubuque, Iowa, concert. To quote, "..they sat down and played Riverside, Three Roses, Rainy Day, I Need You, and Here. If I remember correctly, Gerry and Dewey took turns singing Rainy Day; and what a treat it was! The guitar riff sounded so good; every time I hear it, I can just visualize raindrops rolling down a windowpane."

Love the visual Mr Sage.

I don't know why it's taken me so long to post this youtube clip but as the saying goes - "better late than never" ~

"Rainy Day" - America
(click onto "more info" for lyrics)

Pure acoustic America.

I recently watched a biography about Marc Bolan/T.Rex.
I didn't know that when he and Mickey Finn formed the duo Tyrannosaurus Rex, they played acoustic. When the group moved stance from acoustic to electric instrumentation, added members and shortened it's name to T.Rex, they had many UK hits but lost a lot of their original die-hard fans who preferred their acoustic albums.

America ~ acoustic, electric, trio, duo...there were changes but the fans held tight and just kept on keeping on.

It's been a great 40 year musical journey.

I posted this on the other side as well but I like the fact that with it being a new year, the guys are mixing things up a bit. Thats good news for the diehards who want something a bit different. "Rainy Day" is a fine choice for the guys to add,and a nice nod to another Dan Peek-era track.

With D&G performing "Rainy Day", I just thought of this concert list scenario -

"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Dan Peek

Guitar Man
Train Comin'
Jet Boy Blue
Donkey Jaw
Don't Cross The River
Saturn Nights
It's Life
Love Was Just Another Word
Never Found The Time
Doer Of The Word
Tomorrow
Willow Tree Lullaby
Today's The Day
Rainy Day
Little Darlin'
Woman Tonight
Hurricane
Ready For Love
Half A Man
Glad To See You
Old Virginia
She's Beside You
Brotherly Love
Electro Voice
Everyone I meet Is From California
All Things Are Possible
Lonely People

26...and still great songs left off the list.

Now this is one concert I would love to see live and recorded on DVD.

Bluey, Steven, SteveO...maybe a taste of that will be had in Steelville, MO, at Wildwood Springs. Hopefully, that "songwriters showcase" or whatever will come to fruition. Even solo, Dan ought to get back out there -- he has too much talent to waste it (like the old saying, "use it or lose it"). And he has too many fans who want to see him succeed.

Thanks Steve,

Would those concerts be on CD or tape? Interesting song selections as well - "I Need You" and "Sister Golden Hair".
You have "Electro Voice", do you hear a similarity with the
"SGH" and "All Things Work Together For Good" endings?

Cat, Dan has copped some flack from a few about his voice becoming weaker. I don't agree..."Train Comin'" comes to mind.
I hope the Wildwood Springs session goes ahead and recorded.
It would be terrific if a few fans from here get the chance to see it live.

StevenS...to get tickets to Dan's concert would certainly be worth camping out under the stars. It could be even better if there were 4 gorgeous blonde female fans who just happened to have the same idea :)

Thanks Steve.

A reunited Spandau Ballet just had a very successful tour here and unlike Dewey, Gerry and Dan's scenario, they were able to put aside a decade of bad blood and court battles to get the band back on stage. The fans came out in full, selling out 2 or 3 Sydney Entertainment Centre concerts in our state alone.
