mdh - I've never purchased any music by Buffalo Springfield, but I have of some of their members. I understand the band, interestingly, got its name from a steamroller made by the Buffalo Springfield Roller Company. This is what Wiki has to say about the song in one "brief" sentence (LOL): "Although 'For What It's Worth' is often considered an anti-war song, Stephen Stills was inspired to write the song because of the Sunset Strip curfew riots in November 1966—a series of early counterculture-era clashes that took place between police and young people on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, California, beginning in mid-1966, the same year Buffalo Springfield had become the house band at the Whisky a Go Go on the Sunset Strip./" The previous group reminds me of a very pleasant song from my junior high school days. I purchased the 45 back then and still have it. Written by Graham Nash as it's stated: "Nash recalled his inspiration for the song occurring during a Moroccan vacation he took in 1966. On the trip, Nash traveled by train from Casablanca to Marrakesh. He began the journey in First Class, surrounded by people he found to be uninteresting—as he described it, they were all 'ladies with blue hair.' He decided the compartment was 'completely (f-ing) boring,' so left his seat to explore the other train carriages, and was fascinated by what he saw."
